The shaft on my R580 broke :( I need advice on a new shaft.
Well I have moved to college now and I unfortunately had to leave my clubs at home and when my dad was cleaning the garage my golf bag fell off the shelf and it landed upside down right on my TaylorMade R580 which snapped about 6 inches up the shaft
The problem is I am supposed to be coming home and being in a tournament over the thanksgiving (canadian) weekend so I need to get the shaft fixed soon.
It came with a grafalloy prolite 35-S
I liked this shaft but was having some problems I hadn't really had before with other drivers. I was slicing badly every drive as well as my balls had a very high trajectory no matter how my tee was positioned. The distance I was getting was so much better than with my old driver. I have a medium swing speed (thats what the people at the golf shop told me) I personally think I might be a bit slower than most.
So pretty much I was wondering what you guys would suggest for a shaft?
The devastation
Thank you for any help you can give me, I don't know much about picking a shaft so your help will be greatly apreciated.
if you would, tell us how fast your swing speed is or average drive and if you have a quick motion or a smoother tempo swing. also, what kind of trajectory do you like and what degree driver head.
Sorry about that Umm I am not a very serious golfer, I golf a lot but am not too sure what my swing speed is or handicap or anything. I am going to estimate my drive between 250-260 yds. I would say I have a smoother swing. I like to have a lower trajectory on my shots, and it is a 9.5 degree.
Mikey took the words right out of my mouth. Swing speed, tempo, driver loft, and shaft all play significant rolls in trajectory, distance (carry), etc.
The Grafalloy ProLite 35 is a low trajectory shaft so as far as trajectory is concerned it should be okay. that doesn't mean it's the right shaft for you. It just means that it shouldn't be causing high shots.
that puts you on the borderline of regular to stiff flex.. here are a couple of choice and others will sure to follow. this is a 350 tip size, although a .335 can be shimmed to .350
Just a quick reccomendation...Just had the Harrison Mugen put in my R7 - 425 and am loving it. Brought the trajectory down, added 10-15 yds flight and additional roll. A bit pricey but worth it....
I'm a low-ball hitter as well. I tried a number of shafts in my old R580XD, and was happiest with the Grafalloy Blue Tour shaft. It was the closest in feel, and playing characteristics to the factory TM shaft, which I loved in that driver.
So I ended up getting a prolaunch blue the guy at the shop recommended it. My dad asked for an aldila nv 65 regular flex but they had actually sold there last one yesterday.
Thank you all for your help and I will tell you guys how it works when I get to use it when I come home this weekend.

I hope that shaft works out, but it's designed to be a high-launch shaft, and mine does just that.
yah thats what i thought but apparently the guy told my dad that it was a low trajectory shaft but either way i am sure i will learn to love it. I also have never had a high trajectory shaft so who knows it might be just what I need.
Yes, that Prolaunch shaft is a high ball flight shaft. If you think your ball flight was too high with the old shaft, which was a low ball flight shaft, you will really think it's too high with the new shaft. It sounds like the guy in the golf shop doesn't know a lot about shafts, or he was just trying to sell your dad a shaft because he had it in stock. It's a real good shaft, just not what your dad had asked for. I have one in my G2 and I love the ball flight I'm getting with it. My launch angle is around 15 degrees, and that's working out great for me. I'd recommend the next time you need some work done on any golf club, you and your dad find a different shop to deal with. Any decent golf shop knows that the Prolauch is a high ball flight shaft, and wouldn't try to sell it you someone wanting to lower their ball flight. Let us know how it all works out when you get home and hit some balls with your new toy.
Yah my dad went there asking for the NV 65 (just like I had asked with a prolaunch red being my back up choice) and they didn't have any and it would take a week to get them in, the guy said that the prolaunch blue would be a good low trajectory option. My dad emailed me and told me what the guy had said and told me that he had gotten the prolaunch blue and I thought that I remembered the prolaunch blue being a high hitter, then once you guys all started posting here I called them this morning and asked if it was too late to switch shafts and I guess it is done and ready to be picked up.
So i guess I am stuck with this one but I am excited to see how well it will work and am interested to see how I will do with a high hitting shaft. I haven't golfed in over a month because of college so I am sure I will be rusty but I can't wait to get back on the course and give it a try.
Thanks again for all your suggestions and I will post back with how it works out.

Thanks
Evan,
This is the shop's mistake, not yours. Don't pay for something that isn't going to work. tell them that you will pick it up when they install the correct shaft.
You have enough time to wait for it. Don't pay for their mistake?
You need to call them and tell them it's not too late because it's not what you'd requested. Don't let them take advantage of you. That just carries over and gives quality clubmakers and repair shops a bad name.
