1 or 2 iron

I'm after some advice on long irons, I'm still having massive problems getting off the tee with my driver and 3 wood and because I feel like I need to keep hitting them while I'm playing to get better there ruining my card.

I'm thinking about getting a 1 or 2 iron for use off the tee so I can get some distance and leave the driver for practice sessions, sound like a good idea?

I've never hit an iron longer than a 4 iron, are 1 and 2 irons stupidly hard to hit?

I carry a 1 and a 2 iron. I find them as easy to hit as my 5 iron.

Get a hybrid. They are way easier to hit than a 1 or 2 iron. Just make sure you try alot of them out beforehand. Make sure to try steel and graphite shafted alternatives as well.

Try it out...it is all a part of the golf experience...maybe this will be your new ace in the hole...long irons off of tees aren't that hard to hit and IMO are more accurate than hybrids...

I bought a 2i for that same reason. However, I just kept working on the woods and I now hit the 3W consistently straight into the fairway.

Another option is to consider a 4W or 5W off of the tee as a strategy. It beats looking around for 5 minutes in the woods if you can't hit it straight.

I just got the Medicus Driver and will hopefully get more confidence with the big stick. I used the Medicus iron to improve my consistency with irons - I used to be afraid of hitting any iron longer than an 8i and had resorted to woods (3,5,7) if I needed a long second shot.

In my humble opinion, a 1 or 2 iron is not a club to fall back on if you can't hit a wood. You'd be better off hitting a 4 iron until you get the driver issues worked out. The hybrid idea is something to consider also, however I don't own a hybrid so I can't comment intelligently on how they play.

I wouldn't go down to the 1I. Instead I'd opt for a 2I or 3I off the tee maybe even going up to 4I in some cases. I spent the better part of my first three years golfing without taking the woods to the course and in a way forced myself to learn how to hit the 2, 3, and 4I's very well. Over time I worked on the driver and 3W at the range. In fact, I never took the woods to the course until I was completely comfortable with them (which took the entire three years for the driver and another year with the 3W).

I don't think that they are hard to hit off a tee. They are a viable alternative to a wood provided you have the swingspeed. You'll need to try this out on a range and see what iron gives you the longest carry. Because you are teeing the ball up you can hit with a sweeping stroke, and depending on your ball position, perhaps even on the upswing. You will get a lower ballflight than with a wood or hybrid, but if you play on hard fast fairways you can get a lot of roll. I wouldn't think of using a 1 iron off grass anymore, although I once did. Now there are too many better options.
