Hi. I'm an extremely erratic 18 handicapper. I once played a 9 hole course, shooting 56 on the first nine, and 37 on the back. I'm 17, and currently playing a Golden Bear set that I've had for 3 years, and are showing lots of wear and tear.
I'm looking for a set of quality irons that will hopefully improve my consistancy in the fairways.
I have a very high ball flight, but a lower ball flight isn't necessary with my irons since I hit them a little further than I'd like. I hit my 4-iron as far as my 5-wood, and hit the PW ~135, which leaves a problem for shots under 115.
I usually hit the irons solidly, but have a moderate draw/hook on most shots.
I know that part of the problem is the regular flex shafts on my current set, since my swing requires a stiff flex.
I'm looking for game improvement, but I feel uncomfortable with a huge sole.
I was considering used Ping G2's, Callaway X-16's, Mizuno MX-17's, and Cleveland CG4's.
These all can be found around $300-400. Durability is very important to me, since I plan on keeping this next set for several years.
Of these, or any other irons in this range, which would fit my needs the best?
PS. I guess I should add that I'm left handed, and it can be hard to get my hands on some sets.
Wow, 37. All you need to do is put 2 good 9s together.
Anywho, I play a set of G2s which I am really happy with and also draw/hook the ball like you. The G2 has IMO a huge offset which I believe leads to my draw/hook. So try out the G2 at a range to make sure you don't hook it any worse.

Any advice would be appreciated
I would demo the irons on the range. Look at these for game improvement for the price:
Nike Slingshots
Ben Hogan Apex Edge (Hit well, feel soft and look classy)
TM Rac OS
Nickent 3DX
You can also look at www.rankmark.com that rates clubs based upon Handicap.

From the clubs I have tried out, I would like to get the Nickent 3DX hybrid or the Callaway Fusion irons.
Hey man did you check out the Titleist 775 CB's, there a newer iron out and have a forged cavity back, search ebay you can get them at a reasonable price
Thanks for all the advice. I had no idea that the G2's had such a large offset, which probably won't compliment my draw very well.
I'd really like to try the Slingshot Tours, but it seems like every golf shop only carries the OSS, which I'm not a fan of.
I think I'll demo the CG4's and RAC OS's. I think I'll give the 775's a try as well. I've never hit a forged iron before, but I don't think I'll have a problem with the Titleist's. The cavity should give me the combination of feel and control that I've been looking for.
I just picked up a set of Nickent 3dx irons and quite like them. Very forgiving, good feel. The short irons do have a bit more offset than I'm used to (I was using ancient irons with no offset) which is taking me a bit of time to adjust to so I'd definitely suggest you try it out first.
I got mine on eBay for $290 (steel shafts for the irons) from a seller called "knightpawn1" - I'd highly recommend this seller, very fast delivery, great prices and friendly service.
