Irons with graphite shafts

I picked up a used set of Cobra SSi irons with factory (Aldila) graphite shafts in the spring. I like the way these have performed for the most part, and the long irons are among the very best I have ever used. However, about 2 months ago I found that the shaft on the 7 iron was split at the hosel and needed to be replaced. This Monday I played and on the first tee while I was waiting to go off with the 4 iron, the head literally fell off while I was just standing there. I did not even take a swing with it.

These are the first irons with graphite shafts that I have ever used and none of my playing group uses graphite in their irons. I picked them up because I do a lot of hitting off mats, and I was looking for a way to reduce the shock.
I've used graphite in my driver and 3 wood for years and had no problems whatsoever.

Has something like this ever happened to you or anyone you know. Did I get a really bad set, or have there been other instances of people having problems with graphite in irons? Is there greater stress on the shafts in irons because of the swing path and the shock of hitting the ground?

I use a set of King Cobra II OS, with graphite shafts. You had me concerned so I went and checked mine....they are OK. They are about 10-12 yrs. old Never had a problem.
My playing partner uses a like set but with steel shafts...he has had no problems either.
If they were new take them back to the shop and have them ALL checked.
Even if they weren't new I would take them to a shop and have them checked. They could be really dangerous...during your swing, out on the course..I wouldn't want to be around you.
Or/and contact www.Cobra.com
and tell them and see what they can do!! They just may want to know!! Let us know the results!!

Unfortunately I'm in Canada (Well fortunately for most things, but unfortunately for contacting Cobra) and the only contact info on the Canadian site is:

Canadian Headquarters:

Acushnet Canada Inc.
500 Harry Walker Parkway
Newmarket, Ontario
L3Y 8T6

No phone number, no email. When my 7 iron went the store contacted their rep. They were going to reshaft for $60, but they didn't have an identical shaft, so they put in a current shaft and didn't charge anything. The graphics don't match, but the performance is ok. I'll tell you, resale value of this set is in the dumper. I'm going to bring it back to the shop where I bought it and we'll see. If Accushnet wants the same sort of money, it will be cheaper to pick one up off Ebay.

Quite frankly I am a bit nervous about playing them now.
