At what height would a player use "standard length" shafts? Would +1" inch steel shafts be suitable for a player around 6'0, 6'1?
jr, height alone is not enough to determine proper shaft length. You also have to take into account the length of the arms and the way one sets up and swings the club. These are things that are looked at during a club fitting session and using a lie board, etc. to determine shaft length, lie angle, etc. Static fitting is not really a good indicator. You really need to hit balls on a lie board and then on the range to observe ball flight. The shaft flex is not to be overlooked either. Best of luck.

Every chart in the world says that I should hit standard to +.5" clubs. But for some strange reason, and after being fitted I use +1" over stiff in Irons, Regular in woods. I have never shot better, charts and advice will never do as much for you as a proper fitting.
I ask because someone has overed me a great deal on a set of clubs. Only thing is that they are +1" shafts. I am around 6'1" and I am just trying to determine if I should buy these irons.

Your ball striking, and type of trajectory should determine what length shaft that you use. I'm 6'3" and use standard length shafts, and I choke down on all my irons a little bit , making them a 1/4" shorter in theory. A good friend of mine is 6' 4" and plays standard standard stiff shafts in his Pings ........he's a scratch player. A local Pro in my area is about 5' 7" and plays a 1/2" longer shaft in his irons and 2 degrees flat.
The smartest thing you could do, is to find a couple of clubs that look good to your eye, and have them fitted with over length shafts, and toss em in your bag. Use them for a few rounds and make your own mind up.
Also............be very carefull when going 1" over length. The characteristics of any given shaft will change considerably. Swingweight, tip stiffness, and bend point will not be any where close to the shafts original design.

i'm 6'2, and i play standard length, 2 degrees upright (and would be on most makes of clubs). like everyone else said, it really depends on the individual swing...static measurements are not the most reliable. get on a lie board (preferably on an outdoor range to observe ball flight) with the club fitter there. you can do launch monitor too...i just prefer to actually watch my ball flight...
Since I only have a day to let this guy know (he has more people wanting the clubs) maybe I can leave my stats here and you guys can make an educated guess.
I have been playing for about 3 months now. I am currently playing Wilson Fatshaft IV irons. My swing speed is high 90's / low 100's. As a beginer, i still dont have the strike where I leave a divot in front of the tee, if I leave one, its usually behind the tee. I have 28.5 inches from the floor to the top of my hand if have my arms hanging down. Middle finger to wrist is 8". Middle finger is 3.75" long.
For me fittings are a good guide to help put me on the right track. But I remember Sam Snead said something like, " What works for me may not work for you". So the only way to tell for sure is to get fitted and go see how it works on the course, make adjustments from there to fit your personal needs.
Give you an example. I use regular flex shafts for my irons, stiff flex in my fairway woods and x-stiff flex in my driver.
Looks like I shouldn't go with the +1". Golfsmith's smart fit system says if anything I should go with +1/4". Guess I will stick it out with my standard length irons.

Its hard to really figure by the info you have given. What we need is your height and your wrist to floor measurement. I am assuming the 28.5 measurement from floor to top of yor hand, you mean the tip of your finger? Adding that to the length of your hand, which you say is 8", this gives you a wrist to floor measurment of 36.5". Being 6'1" with a wrist to floor measurement of 36.5" would put you in between standard and + .5". This is where being tested on a lie board comes in to determine your proper length.
Depending on how great a deal you are getting, you could always have the shafts shortened as long as the shafts are full length and not lengthened by extensions.
Also, seeing that your hand is 8", if that is correct, your grips should be two sizes over standard. This is more important than the length of your shafts.
jrsharp21; If you can get a good deal on those clubs, why not just buy them now. You can get fit at Golfsmith or some other place later, and if you need the shafts shorter, it's real easy to have the shafts cut down to fit you. It's not expensive, and if the price is that good, I'd recommmend you do exactly that. Nothing says you can't buy the clubs now, try them out as is, and they get fit later. If you want to save money, you could get fit, and then cut the shafts down to fit yourself. Add new grips if you need to, and it's really cheap. Does that sound like a good plan?
I don't want to burst your bubble, but looking at the fitting questiosn he asks you are not getting truly custom fit clubs. He is going to use standard charts to fit you to what the normal person with a perfect swing is going to use. You really need to get fit in person where a person can measure you porperly but most importantly see how you swing the club.
