For Complete Newbie! Equipment recommendation!

Hello All!

I am glad that this kind of community exists and you guys have been maintaining this community like this. Please allow me to join in this community and I am expecting (and of course looking forward) to be an active member in this community.

I am 5ft11 and 182 pounds male, who recently started getting into "golf". Matter of fact is that my father got me $500 worth of gift card that I can use in local golf shop. (he really wants to put me into the same golf addiction that he has had for long long time...).

Anyway, what is the good set of club for me to start?, I have never ever even touched any golf club (even though I am pretty good at and enjoying any kind of sports, soccer, basketball, tennis, pool, etc etc, somehow, I haven't touched golf so far...)

How about adams tight lies set? which runs around 399 in local (299 in internet retailer...)

Or any other recommendation?

It will/should be my first equipment to learn and to enjoy golf....

At this point, I am not that serious, if I can use the club for the next 3~5 years, it will be great!.

Also, can anyone recommend good/reliable web retailer? Local store seems charging a little more....

Thank you ! hope to get into this community in more actively as soon as possible.

Check e-bay for best prices. It can't be stressed enough that you should go to the Golf store and try out a few clubs to see what looks good/ feels good to you. There's a reason there are so many brands. Also, to play your best golf, you need to get your clubs fitted.
Beyond that, understand that your probably not going to be very good when you start. Stay patient, keep a sense of humor and have as much fun as you can...you'll find pretty quick that golf is much harder to pick up than Basketball, soccer and pool, all games that I also have played all my life.
Golf has by far given me the most trouble...I still have a hard time accepting that I cant hit a little white ball (thats not even moving!) exactly where I want. It's why in two years, I've become an "addict"....
Good Luck!!

Thanks Bryan

Yes! I will stop by local shop very soon and will try a few. However, frankly speaking (again), I have never even touched golf club at all. So, I am a little bit wondering what kind of "feel" I need to look for when I try some in local shop. That is why I am trying to depend on other's review also.

Thank you anyway.

If you've never touched a golf club, then just go out and pick up a decent starter set and spend the rest of the money on lessons. The clubs you start w/aren't nearly as important as learning proper technique. Also hit the driving range. Once you learn how, hit as many golf balls as you can.

the sites i like are www.tgw.com
www.golfsmith.com
www.golfgalaxy.com
they usually have some pretty good deals on clubs

I was thinking about getting the Tight Lies set myself but I started looking at iron sets and they have these Adams GT3 Irons that are supposed to be really good.. the cheapest i have seen them for is 199.99 for steel and 299.99 for graphite.

Hopefully I helped ya out a bit

-Matt

As a newbie, look for a good set of Game Improvment clubs. Most important is to make sure you get the right shafts (flex) and are fitted for the correct lie. Go and get custom fitted. You dont have to buy a set and many retailers have Swing analyzers in their stores and will do it for free. If they know what's going on they can make recomendations which you can use to further your search. All the major manufactures have a good selection and many component shops will custom build a set of irons for as little as $200. Check out bandmgolf.com they've been around for about 45 years and can help you over the phone. 800-245-3222

im guessing you're gonna want to get everything at the local store since you've got the $500 gift card (very generous gift you got there, lucky)...as someone said before, game improvement clubs are the best, and prolly no blades...get some cavity backs...at a local golf shop a fitting cost $50 or so, but that gets discounted from the price of your irons themselves...i think some good sets are the cleveland launchers, cleveland launcher lp's (i have these, they are amazing), taylor made rac os2, the nike slingshots are realllllllly easy to hit and get the ball up in the air, but they are rpolly still $600 at the golf shops...bascially, go to the shop, hit a couple different irons there, and take some irons to demo at the drviing range, see which one is best for you....BUT, since you are just starting out and (may not end up staying with the game, after all its unfair to say EVERYONE loves golf [though everyone on this forum does]) don't want to waste money, lcoal shops may still have some beginner's sets which are good for even a few years til you decide whether or not you are gonna stick with the game....if you do have money after the irons, i would suggest going with a putter from the shop...putting is all about feel and confidence, what may be a great putter for you may actually be horrible for someone else...in terms of fairway woods, hybrids, drivers, you can try those out somewhere, maybe sports authority, then look on ebay...but def. get fitted for the irons if you plan on sticking with the game...good luck and have fun with the game...its frustrating, i just started playing again this year after a couple year break and my handicap went up a LOT from the last time i played...okay, im rambling...good luck again

Thanks for all your input. Now, I realized that I do not need to buy everything in one shot. Rather, I should prepare a few good irons to start, Am I right?

Now, I am narrowing down my own choices as follow, if you can advise one for me (or advise to look for something else), that will be definately great!.

Choice 1. Adams Tight Lies Classic 13-Piece Set w/ Bag Price: $299.00 at clickandsavegolf.com
=> Has anyone shopped at clickandsavegolf.com? Their price is really great! Shipping seems not much either. Are they selling used?

Choice 2. Adams GT3 Steel Irons with Free wedges (10 piece set-3-PW with free Sand Wedge and Lob Wedge) Price: $164.00 at clickandsavegolf.com

Choice 3. Adams Hybrid Set ORIGINAL IDEA IRONS : Special Sale price $299.00 at CarlsGolfLand.com (graphite regular).

The choice2. ( Adams GT3 Steel Irons at $164.00) at clickandsavegolf.com seems really attractive. Wouldn't it be a good starter Iron set to learn golf with?

Thank you again in advance and have a nice day!

By the way, my gift card (from my father) is for local "CarlsGolfland.com", where seems only too good equipements are available.... (I am bargain-hunter... ) I think $500 gift card can be consumed by my wife or brother too... So, If I can find better deal in e-tailer, I will go toward that way instead of paying more in local shop even though it is gift card...

Any of the Adams clubs look good. Just make sure they have a good shaft that you won't grow out of w/in the first year. The pro there should be able to help out.

The best thing you can do though is get some lessons. Before I even got on the course, I took group lessons. There were about 10 of us, and we each hit balls for 2 hours while the pros watched over us. By the end of that year, I was consistantly shooting in the 40s. I'd try to find something like that. It's not overly expensive, and gets you on teh right track.
