X outs?

I found a ball yesterday and it reminded me of a question I have always had...what exactly makes a ball qualify for x out status? Obviously it has to do with an imperfection of a sort in the manufacturing, but what exactly is the imperfection that allows the ball to be playable, if not up to standard specs? Also, are these allowed in serious competitions? I imagine if you are a serious competitor you pony up (or are given) a ball of standard quailty, but hypothetically speaking are these legal balls?

I used to regularly play, and still have (1) dozen, Titleist Pro V1 X-Outs.

Nothing wrong with the ball except for cosmetic blemishes. Some of them were really funny.

One time I found a ball that had Titleist written on one side with no number. Another time I found one that had Tite.... missing the rest of the printing. These balls were same performance quality as regular Pro V1s.

They cost $22.00 a dozen back when I bought them. Wish I had bought a case given that they don't make them any longer and that Pro V1 is my favorite ball.

Not sure about other X-Out balls. Never played them much to know.
