If all goes to plan I should be on the right side of 10 in the next couple of months (aiming for 7-8 by the summer '07). I was just curious what model and types of irons people play at this level. Once people hit the single figure mark do you tend to change to more of a players club?
I keep being told that there is no real need to change but see a lot of users on here playing players clubs eg MP-32, MP-60 (I am guessing that they are single figure handicaps?) and although I dont want a pure blade I am curious to whether a more compact (but still semi forgiving) players club will offer any benefits once I get to that 7-8 hcp level?
It is more important to have them custom fitted than any particular make. Most of the top brands are the same ,but you have to feel confident standing over them. It is in your mind rather than their factory!
BTW we have a single figure golfer using Wal MArt specials at our club, so worry about the swing not the clubs!
MP 32's for me. Best irons I've hit thus far in my golf career. I'll not be switching for a long time. I didn't Didn't really think that I needed to switch to a so called "players club" by being a lower handicap. I just can't stand the looks of an oversized iron with a thick top line. The MP 32's are pretty forgiving though. It's not like they sting your hands on everything less than perfect.
I think it all depends on the type of ball striker you are, and how many greens in reg you hit...I am a 0 or better handicap and hit about 15 greens a round and I use pure blades usually or sometimes a nice forged cavity...I have a friend who is a 2 and plays HUGE offset irons and hits about 6 or 7 greens but has an amazing short game....So it all depends on what you feel comfortable with...There are many tour players playing huge cast cavity backs...It is all in what you prefer!
I play the MP-32s with Dynamic Golf S300 Shafts. My swing is more of a "picking" style and from experience a smaller blade suits me better. I tried the Callaway X14s and have hit the X18s but they do not suit my game. I believe each person should try each club type and decide which one looks and performs best for them.
My index is around 7 right now and I've been playing the Nike Pro Combo Tour irons for about 8 months. I also never made a conscious decision to move toward more of a "players" club, but like others, I can't stand the look of an overside, thick top line club. These are a great club for anyone in the 10 and under range. Good feel, but actually still fairly forgiving on slight mis hits.

My ball striking is good, and getting better. My GIR is currently around 40-50% so 7-9 per round, but the percentage missed isnt from bad strikes (toe/heel/thins), its a swing inconsistancy, athough since I have ironed this out at the weekend on the practice field, I havent had a chance to play.
I am not a fan of oversized/midsize heads but purchased my current sticks to help me get back into the game with a little help, I cannot fault them so far but I find there size/shape a little cumbersome around the green and just prefer the classic more compact head shape eg Srixon 506 or MP-60
Yea that makes sense..Looking down at a club, and not being happy is not a good thing...Mizuno makes good sticks, and Nike is coming out with some new forged cci irons that are perfect looking clubs that feel great....They come out in February!
I would'nt wait until you are specifically into single figures to change the clubs. As others have said its about preference, the way they look at address. Your ball striking sounds fine. I'm around a 13-14 index and have just switched from Callaway BB 04's to the MP32's. Yet to have them retrospectively custom fitted but in the two rounds since the switch i've shot a 75 and an 84 which is a personnel best and around usual respectively. I too tend to have solid iron ball-striking but have already noticed better rewards for the good swings. Go for it and improve with these clubs rather than beating yourself up waiting for the magic sub-10 index.
Just the route i'm taking though, may not be for you
mizunos are super great irons....again the only reason i went to blade style irons is for a little more control...minimum offset vs. what most cb's have....its easier to work the ball back to the right with less offset...another biggie is that the rough doesn't affect the club as much....smaller clubhead equals less resistance....
I think everyone at 12 or better should switch to blades or something similar...no sense having clubs that play the game for you....it's good to know that when you hit a great shot with these that it was a good swing and the club didn't compensate for an inadequacies you may have.

In my opinion the Nike Pro Combo Tours are some of the most overlooked and overrated quality clubs on the market.
