Driver Shaft Question

Hello all,

A couple months ago I purchased the Titleist 905R 9.5 with the UST proforce V2 76g shaft (stiff). I do love this club. However, didn't get it fit with a launch monitor at the time and just recently was able to get in front of one. The guy fitting me (who seemed very knowledgable) said he probably would have fit me with the same club and shaft, but 8.5 degree and x-flex.

So here's the question, the distance I'm loosing with the 9.5 versus 8.5 degree is made up by the distance I'm gaining with the stiff instead of the extra stiff...should I replace the shaft with the extra stiff and get a bit more control? Or should I keep the current set up and work harder on my tempo?

That is hard to say. Unless your a hard hitter and have a high ball flight a 9.5 should be fine. If your ball flight is too high then yes you may be loosing distance which can be re-gained by going to a stiffer flex shaft. However you must really swing fast because the V2 is stiff already and in a full bore thru head like the 905 it makes the shaft play X-flex already.

Do you like the control you have right now? Control and distance are not the same thing.

I'm beginning to see some improvement on my control, have been doing a lot of practice on my temp and have...gasp...throttled back my swing a bit. I do have a fairly high ball flight, but I think I'm going to move the ball back in my stance to somewhere between my left shoulder and left heel.

In terms of swing speed I generally swing somewhere in the area of 115 - 120 mph and can crank it up to about 125 if I want.

Control: I usually hit it fairly straight with a 10 or so yard draw or sometimes a fade. However, there are times when I can really hit a mean hook.

So basically I have the distance to spare (insert 10 responces about how I'm exaggerating my distances) but could use a little more control, which the x-flex could give me. I just really wish I had fit myself with a launch monitor before buying this club.

I wouldn't worry about the loft, most pros use at least 9.5 these days. Loft helps more than it hurts. But you probably would be better off with X flex by the sounds of it. The V2 stiff works great for me, and I'm only 100mph.

Cool

Don't assume that a stiffer shaft will give you more control, and have you hitting more fairways. It can work that way, and it can be the exact opposite if the shaft is too stiff for you. If you don't "LOAD" the shaft correctly, a stiffer shaft can cause you to drive the ball all over the place, just as much as one that is too soft for you. As you mentioned, you should have spent some time on a launch monitor and found out what you needed before you got that new driver. Personnally, I wouldn't buy any dirver with less than 10.5*'s of loft, and I top out at 110. I have a smooth swing, and I don't load the shaft too much, so I can get away with a R flex, even at 110. It all depends on your swing and how you load the shaft.

hmmmm...I may just run by my local fitting shop and check out my current driver on the launch monitor and then try out the 8.5 x and the 9.5x. I might just consider e-baying my current club and picking up one of these if they make a difference.

If you honestly have a swing speed of 120..You should def have an X flex in my opinion!

I think I'm going to go by and check out what the launch monitor says, once I do that I'll post the results and see what everyone's opinions are. NikeRep, what do you think about the loft? Also, is that new SUMO really that great? Looks kinda funky to me!

Well I cant tell you what loft is right for you without seeing your trajectory and launch numbers...A high launch isnt bad as long as its low spin...I spin the R waaaaay to much...I like the S a lot because its low spin and low launch......The sumo and sumo2 are great, but dont take my word for it....take the launch monitors numbers for it ...Get a sumo2 in your hands 8.5 with a Mitsu bishi Diaman 83X, and I bet your numbers would be better than your current driver haha.....But seriously...I dont want to "sell" someone a driver...I want to fit them for the best driver...regardless if its Nike or not!

We'll see, as you can see by my name I'm a big titleist fan, though I did suggest the sasquatch to my father. Just got the 905R and I do absolutely love it. Maybe its an issue I have but I just can't get over that classic pear shape.

Hey trust me..I had the D 10.5 in Middle school then got a 6.5 my Freshman year, the E 8.5 with graf prolite and the S 8.5 graf blue, and then I got the sasquatch diamana even before I got a job at Nike...I hated the look of the SQ, but I couldnt deny results, and my college scores proved it! More fairways, lower scores! I'm just saying hit both
