3-Wood: Control or Distance Club?

Question: Do you consider the 3-wood to be more of a distance club or a control club?

Here's why I ask. I just purchased a Callaway Steelhead III 3-wood and am trying to decide on a shaft for it. I'm thinking on matching the 3-wood shaft with my driver shaft (which I will be switching sometime in the near future) to achieve similar feel/playing characteristics in those clubs. However, a friend suggested I get a shaft with a lower kick point and softer tip in my 3-wood to help get the ball off the ground. I've always tried to have similar shafts in my woods.

Do any of you shaft your 3-wood differently (purposely) and if so, what are your reasons/rationale.

I hit my driver more straight than I do my 3 wood...Anytime I try and play "safe" and hit 3 wood, I usually get in more trouble than I would with my driver..I have a 3 wood, to hit a certain distance!

Distance...and usually off the tee only. I very rarely use it to go for a green in two, 9 times out of 10 I will just lay up. If it was more of a control club for me, I def. be better at the long game.

Both- I use my three wood more often than I use my D-spackle.

I've always played 3's that I can murder and control. So they usually have smaller heads than most peoples' three woods.

My current three, r7 TP, is the best I've ever played. It's the first one I can hit consistanly from the fairway as well as a tee.

Well for me, the only club in the bag that I'm using for distance is the driver. No need to try and get distance out of your three wood in my opinion, because if you're going for distance off the tee then why not just use driver anyway?

I have steel shafts in everything except my driver for this purpose. I love steel shafts in my fairway woods because I'm using them for placement, not for distance.

With the size of Drivers these days, I feel way more confident hitting my big burly driver than I do hitting my piddly little 3 wood off the tee, on tight fairways or otherwise. Plus, I hit my hybrid a mile off the deck, and feel much more confident with that off the fairway than my 3 wood. So I really don't know why I carry a 3 wood at all sometimes.

It's handy off the tee if the drivers too long. That's about it.

Anyway, to answer your question, if you mainly use it off the tee as a safety club, get a shaft with more control. If you mainly use it off the fairway when you need a lot of distance, then get a low kickpoint shaft that will help you get it off the ground and hit it a long way.

The question is do you need it. Off the fairway do you get the loft you like. What is the makeup of your current 3 wood.
It is a good idea to have you long clubs do there best when using the same swing. Off the rack clubs (which I use) have totally different characteristics. Having a better kick on the 3 woods so you can have a similar swing as with the driver can give you consistency.

I hit my 5 wood and 3 wood roughly the same distance off the deck around 215-220. So I always hit my 5 wood from fairways. Off the tee though I still hit my 5 wood about 220, but I can crack 240 with my 3 wood. Plus my 3 wood tends to roll really good from a tee shot. I hit my 3 wood off of most par 4s and a squirelly par 5s. unless it is wide open and then I will rip the driver.

I have the Graf Blue stiff in my 3 wood. It's definetly a distance club for me as the trajectory is low and when you catch one it flys like an exocet. I probably only use it 2 or 3 times a round as I don't really like it off the tee.

If it's landing it on the green your after, don't pick this shaft.
