Club Face Technology in Drivers

Did a search on this and couldn't find anything so here goes...As a former baseball coach, I noticed over the years that metals used to make aluminum bats became thinner and more responsive, but it also decreased the life of the bat, leaving dents after just one season. And wow, has the price gone up. "When I was young..." we could get at least 4 years out of a bat.

My question for all of you who might know is whether or not driver club face technology is going down the same road - more responsive, shorter life. I'm amazed at how often new designs come out and how many people I'm acquainted with purchase new drivers every couple of years or so. Does a driver really lose its "pop" or "ping" or "click" or whatever that soon?

I don't have enough money laying around to buy the latest and greatest every year (got my driver on clearance at Dick's), but I also need as much help as I can get on the course!

Cool

I'm sure there is what you might call a life span, for a driver or any other wood for that matter. But if I remember correctly, it was stated to be a lot longer in terms of balls hit, than you and I are likely to reach. The USGA has put a "limit" on golf clubs a few years ago, so all the OEM's are not able to make the faces thinner and thinner to get more distance out of them. That means that the face is not going to get to the point that it wears out in a year or two. You might crack a driver face now and then, but on the whole, they stand up pretty well for what they have to endure.
