I don't know why I'm posting this.. I guess I already know the answer. I'm just venting I suppose.
I'm in the market for a new set of irons. But I don't have a clue which ones I want. I'm tired of going into stores and hitting of a ****** little green mat into a net. The mats feel like hitting a brick off of pavement, and who knows how the ball is flying into the net. Launch monitors and all that stuff can give me statistics, but I want results. I want to see how the ball flies and how far it flies.
The last thing I want to do is hit some irons off a mat into a net and think "these are great!"... pay for them.. then realize at the course I hit them pathetically.
Most of the people I play with don't use any sets that I am interested in. It's just really aggravating to be expected to spend that kind of money without first hitting a set. Heck I'd be willing to drive 3 or 4 hours just to be able to hit several sets OUTSIDE!

Nyper,
You might try calling some of your local courses and seeing what they have as far as rental clubs available. I've seen Pings, Callaways, and even Mizunos available for rent with a round of golf. Maybe that might work?

Thanks MrBill.. but there are only a couple public courses around here and they don't have much of anything worthwhile for rent. There are only a coupe local shops also. One doesn't allow you to take clubs out of the shop to try, the other is temporarily closed while they move to a new location.
if u have a golfsmith nearby, they have a guarantee, 90/90 or something like that. 90 days and u can return for 90% TOWARDS a new set. not a bad deal if you really dont like the clubs.
some of our upscale driving ranges have "Taylor made or Ping" days when sales reps bring out their wares and allow everyone to try them..Check some of the upscale ranges or clubs in your area.
haha... after searching all day (ive done this several days), i stumbled upon Carolina Golf Academy. I don't know how I've overlooked it before. I called & they do a full range of custom fitting with Mizuno, Ping, Titleist, Callaway, and Nike. They have both indoor & outdoor setup. I was very clear talking to the guy & expressing the fact that I want to hit/test clubs outdoors. He was very clear in expressing that they definitely wanted to see my full ball flight outdoors and he assured me I wouldn't be disappointed or stuck hitting into a net.
They charge $40 to set up an appointment for a fitting with a pro. Looks like I may give that a shot next weekend.

Hey Nyper,
You found the "pot-of-gold"!! Getting fitted...OUTDOORS...is the only way to go!
I went & did my fitting this morning. Then I selected 3 demo irons I liked that fit my specs and hit them:
Mizuno MP-60
Mizuno MX-25
Titleist 735.CM
The MX-25 was ok, but the face felt huge and I just didn't like the general feel of them. The instructor said he wouldn't really recommend them for me anyway.
The MP-60 set up nicely, but I didn't really like the way it felt.
The Titleist 735.CM set up nicely, and I really liked it. I think that was largely due to the fact that it looked relatively similar to my current set of old Titleist 990's. The only club they had in these was 6 irons, which was somewhat disappointing. I know these are a 'progressive' set and I really wanted to hit the 3/4 and 9/PW.
The weather was cold, and I started swinging really horribly. Not to make excuses, but I hit too many balls too quickly and just got all out of whack. I started shanking things and hitting shots that I haven't hit in 10 years. I decided to go back another day when it was warmer & hit them again rather than order clubs after such a disheartening session.
Basically I've ruled out the Mizunos (yeah, I know I'll get cursed for that), and leaning toward the Titleist 735.CM. However, I would really like to hit some Clevelands if I can find a place that has them...

I would wait until the Nike cci forged come out in feb before you make a bad decision!!
I saw the cast Nike CCI's at the local shop here and they are a very good looking club. I didn't swing them, but just looking at them was a good thing.
