Need help with stocking the bag with woods/hybrids

Hello,

I'm a long time golfer and new member here. I'm an 18 handicap and I'm looking to make some changes to my bag for next season.

I currently have a Taylor Made 16* hybrid that I'm hitting off the tee about 220-230 yards. I'd like to add a 3 wood to the bag, but not sure what loft to get. I have a 15*, but that seems awful close to the Taylor Made Hybrid and I'm not sure it wouldnt be redundant. I seem to hit them about the same distance.

Also considering removing my 3 and 4 irons and replacing with the Taylor Made Rescue Duals. Would that be a 19* and a 22* to replace the 3 and 4 respectively?

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Steve

I would say if you want to add a 3-wood, you could look at getting a 13° model. I would only add the 3-wood if you have a pretty good gap between your driver and 16° though. If you are comfortable with your 16° hybrid and do not hit your long irons well, then I would definately say switch to hybrids in your 3 and 4 irons. Make sure you fill your gaps as evenly as you can between the 16° and your 5-iron and you'll be set.

Sounds like you are a pretty long hitter, though, and you'd probably be better served by tweaking the shorter irons by adding a wedge or evening out the gaps than by adding a 3-wood.

Steve,

As bizzare as this sounds, I went from a 16 to a 9 handicap JUST with the help of hybrids. Believe it ot not, the LONGEST iron I have in my bag is a 7. I have a driver, then Nike Hybrids in 18*, 22*, 26*, and 30* degree lofts. The Nike's get the ball up and land so softly I can actually spin a ball BACKWARDS when hitting an approach shot!

Like I said, it sounds bizzare, but it DEFINATELY worked for me!!!

I just checked the lofts of my 3 and 4 woods. They are 21.5* and 24* respectively. I like the Taylor Made Rescue Dual and they are available in 16*, 19*, 22*, 25* degree versions. So if I get a 22* and a 25* to replace my 3 and 4 iron that only leaves a 2 degree gap between 4 and 5 with my 5 iron being 27*. Does this really matter. Do the lofts of hybrids translate literally to the lofts of irons?

Heres another interesting question. I have a Cleveland Halo 19*. It calls itself a 2 iron. My Taylor Made 16* also calls itself a 2 iron. Seems like a rather large difference in lofts to both be a 2 iron???

Any help?

One thing I forgot to mention about the Nike hybrids is that the shafts are definately shorter than you will find on normal woods. The shaft on my 30* hybrid is only about a 7 iron shaft length. I think the shorter shafts make them so much easier to swing and control, thats why I find them so much more accurate (for me) that long irons. Instead of hitting a 3 or 4 iron and trying to hit the green, the Nike's let me "throw darts" from 180 yards out. I aim at the PIN, not just the green!
