Women's clubs

Well, the woman wants to take up golf. She is pretty excited about it and wants to buy a set of clubs. She was ready to buy them today! But I told her to let me look around a bit first and see what we could come up with.

There's no sense in spending a lot of money on a set for her. She has never played, and frankly she may quit after just a month or so. I think she is athletic enough that she can learn, and she's hit some good shots with my clubs. Buuuut she wants her own.

Are these "ladies" sets they sell worth a poop? Particularly the ones where you get a full set and the bag? I know I would never buy a set like that for myself, but I've been playing for a dozen years and such. I would really just like to find her a decent set of irons for around $150 or so. It doesn't matter if they are used. I can find her a driver/3 wood to use among my stash of ones I don't use and have it cut down for her.

What about these mama jama's? They seem about half worthless to me, but may suit her just fine. Suggestions?

Any of those would be ok, but if I were you, I would find a local club fitter, that actually knows what he is doing, and have him make her a few clubs such as a driver, a 7 wood, and maybe a few irons...Make sure they are the right length, and right shafts...See if she enjoys the game, and after that, maybe fill in the gaps of the set....I think that would be the best way to go!

I agree get her say a driver, 4 wood, 7 wood, a few irons and a putter fit to her. If she likes em then fill the gaps and she's got a custom fit set that she can rely on for years. It'll probably save you some dough in the long run if she likes the game.

I I have about $300.00 in my wifes clubs, I bought most of it from Ebay or www.rockbottomgolf.com. Here is what she carries

14* Bang Pink-O-Matic Driver (wow this thing is awesome gave her 50 more yards than the Cougar Driver I got her at first)

Taylormade R580 3&5 Woods (paid about $30 bucks a piece for them new, Nice FWs)

Adams Idea 4H, 5H, 6-GW (she loves the Hybrids but has trobule with the irons, but she has always had trouble with irons)

Adams Idea Pink Putter (very nice I even like the way it feels)

Cleveland CG11 Womens SW (she rarely uses it)

If it were my wife she would go directly to the most expensive stuff out without even knowing it. This is one reason (of many) that she ain't playing golf with me.

I'd like to see a 5 wood in there (4 wood be ok I suppose...), but def no 3 woods (13-15 degrees). BAD idea.

Here's a thought: Get her a few lessons with a pro that does fittings too. Send her there with a few of your clubs that she has hit well.

If I were you, I'd just get a fairly cheap complete set. I know I disagree with most of the rest of the above guys, but here is my reasoning:

1) If she hates it/drops it in a month, you are only out a little amount of money compared to what it would cost to get her fitted/have custom built clubs

2) Many clubmakers would advise that a person get a consistant swing before fitting. If she is fitted off of the bat, and her swing improves, then her clubs will have to be "re-fit" $$$

3) The complete set will do her fine for a while, and if she does like it, then in a year or so, ya'll can go shopping, and she'll have a much better idea of her strengths and weaknesses. She may want a mallet putter instead of that blade, or maybe this hybrid instead of that iron, etc. Also, with a little time, and more knowledge, her new set will be selected based on performace instead of the ones with the pink shafts!

Good luck, my wife got into golf a couple of years ago, and is still using her starter set. (Academy Sports Specials!) When my boys get a little older and hit the course with us, she said she'd like to upgrade.
