Sky Caddie question

Do you have to be on or near a golf course hole for it to work? Example, could I use it in my back yard to measure the carry distance of my pitching wedges?

A very cool Skycaddie feature I just figured out.

Now you can get accurate yardage readings at your local range! OK, so I was thinking today at the range that it sure would be nice to know what the real yardages are to those different flags. Since the tee boxes can be moved forward or back up to 30 yards, you really never know.

I figured a way to get all those distances stored on your skycaddie. All you need to do is use the map your own course feature and map the different flags on the range. You will have to go after hours when noone is on the range of course. Just go to flag 1 click/mark as hole #1....flag 2 click/mark as hole #2... mark all the flags or signs on your range. Next time wherever you are teeing off from you will have an exact yardage to each flag (hole) on your created course.

I just went outside and did a little test in my yard. I setup an imaginary teebox by my door and then walked off about 50 yards and marked hole #1. Walked off another 50 yards and marked hole 2. Walked off another 50 yards and marked hole 3.

Then I went back to my original "teebox" at my door. I chose to play my created course and selected hole #1, cool right around 50 yards! Chose Hole#2, right around 100 yards, Chose hole #3 right around 150 yards. You get the point, pretty **** cool!!

Im going to head over to my range tomorrow evening and walk out and mark all the flags. Im always up there and they know me so im sure they wont have a problem with it

Ill let you know how it works out but im sure it will work perfect considering I will be doing the same exact thing i did out in my yard for my "virtual range" test.

That sounds like a great idea!

I have to get me a SkyCaddie.

I played last season with a guy who had one and I was thoroughly impressed with it's ability. What impressed me even more was how quick and easy it was to use. I've shied away from GPS toys because I always thought that they were a pain to use. But after watching this guy use his SkyCaddie, I was sold.

I hinted at it for Christmas, but Santa let me down, so now it's up to me.

I understand that there are now four models to choose from. What I especially like is that the original, (or is it the second model?), is now regularly under $300. Is this a good model?

I believe it's the SkyCaddie 2, which is the one that guy had with him.

I don't need too many "bells and whistles", I just want basic yardages.

Is the Model 2 a good buy?

It will work. Just use the function that let's you mark a spot, then walk to the next spot to mark the distance.

I was a little surprised when I first turned on my new GPS caddie (iGolf) in the den after downloading my home course. It informed me I was 10,118 yards from the center of green #1. I live a few miles away. I had assumed that it would only work on the course. Duh.

Great! That should be very helpful in establishing variable stroke distances for my 4 wedges a la the Dave Pelz system.

One thing that I did with my Sky Caddie, that you may consider. On the place where you can make your own course, I mapped my driving range (of course not when it is being used). That way no matter where I am in the line or how close or far the boxes are, I can help guestimate what distance I am hitting my clubs. Yes I know range balls are different, but still, if I am shooting at the white flag that should be 150 yards, I can at least have an idea of what club I should be hitting towards that green.

The SG2 is definitely a fine unit. I have used it for the last 6 months. Unfortunately I am a gadget freak and have to have the newest everything so I bucked up for the newer SG4. Its definitely a nicer presentation but the same features essentailly as the SG2. I think you can get a new SG2 on ebay for about $220 these days, even cheaper for the slightly used ones.

PS - Send me a PM if you would be interested in buying my SG2 (mint). I was planning on selling it on ebay anyway. Ill knock $20 off the going rate for a used SG2 on ebay if you are interested. Lemme know....

The SG1 is a no frills one and costs less than the SG2.

I am trying to figure out what the differences are between SG1 and the iGolf GPS since they are similar in price.

I am stuck between considering the Sureshot GPS or a Rangle finder with slope.

Rangefinders with slope are not legal in tournament play.

The SG2 is great. The only differences (I've noticed) in the SG2 and the SG3 and 4 is that the SG3 and 4 are listed as being waterproof and they have a new, different look. The SG3 uses regular batteries and the SG4 uses a Lithium Ion rechargeable battery (like the SG2). The debate over which is better, the SG2 or the iGolf, depends on your personal preferences.

SG2 Pros- have a huge database of professionally mapped courses (with intelligreen mapping)
SG2 Cons - Yearly fee; can't swap mappings with a friend who mapped a course without going online; can only map 3 points per hole (usually used for front, back and center of green) when mapping the courses yourself

iGolf Pros - allows up to 8 points mapped per hole when doing it yourself; easy to swap mappings with friends who have an iGolf; no yearly fee
iGolf Cons - no intelligreen mappings; much smaller database of courses to choose from (meaning you'll have to map courses yourself the first time you play it with the iGolf)

So, IMO, they're pretty even. I personally like the intelligreen feature and the convenience of not mapping it myself, so I would choose the SG2 over the iGolf.
