Question adding 18 gram tungsten weight to Taylormade r7

so i was shopping around on ebay for some r7 tp irons last night and i came across this seller that makes heavier weights for r7 drivers. he has 14 gram,18 gram, 20 gram and 22 gram weights. he uses tungsten and charges $50 for any two weights you want. he gaurentees you ad between 20- to 40 yards to your driving distance. i dont know if any of you have tried these or if this has been talked about...but im really curious. right now my r7 is set up at high nuetral with the standard size weights 2 tens and 2 twos. and i hit it fine but if i could add just 20 yards to my drive i would spend the fifty no problem,,,the thing is i dont know if i believe the hype. but i aslo noted and saw his feedback rating was 100% and he has sold over 2000 weight sets....so it must be true then huh? i dunno im a skeptic. Please fill me in if any of you know anything at all about this thanks.

I don't know much about it but I wonder if it is legal. Have you checked on that?

Funny how that idea hadn't occurred to the Taylormade engineers!

This is just my guess, but

20-40 yards... if and only if you can maintain the same swing speed. Which is highly doubtful, otherwise you'd be swinging the regular driver faster and be looking for a lower lofted driver.

If it is legal, straightshooter has probably the best point that could ever be made... if it is just that simple, TM would be all over it. If it is also that simple, why not just add some lead tape and try it out. A little try before you buy -- you can take the tape off and then get the new weights if it works.

However, the physics just don't bear out. Assuming you keep the same force, you will swing a heavier headed club slower. Now, the extra weight may change the impact characteristics, leading to a higher launched ball. And will so many people playing a driver loft that is really too low for them, maybe the extra weight leading to a higher lauch did indeed yield the extra distance. But, that kind of claim seems incredibly unlikely.

Another thought, though this is just idle speculation, perhaps the extra weights were not offered since it stresses the club head too much? Sure, you can hit it farther while it stays in one piece, but maybe the extra weight causes higher stresses in the face and body and shaft than designed for... making the club life a whole lot shorter? And while many people change drivers like they change their clothes, I bet no one want the club to just wear out after just a few hundred or thousand drives. It's just a guess, but something to think about.

.

I agree with the comments above.

If I were you, I'd save the fifty bucks and go work on my short game instead.

I have two of the heavier weights in my monza corza but I only paid 25$ shipped for the pair. I am thinking mine are the 26grams , but I would have to go weigh them to be sure again.

Anyhow to my point, I think they may indeed make them illegal for tournament use as far as drivers are concerned. This has to increase the MOI greatly. If it gets past the legal point than you are out of luck. The TM tour van does have the heavier weights , but they are not for the public. Without having it measured, I would say be careful if your intend to play in tourneys.

I read about a guy trying them somewhere. He said he gained no distance, but hit the ball straighter than he thought possible.

20-40 yards....what ever. All it will do is make your driver heavier.

I bought the weights and tried them, in all possible combinations. 1) They were very good quality, and worked similar to the originals with exception of the extra weight. 2) They definitely change the feel of the club, and the flight as the originals do 3) Forget about extra distance, that is hype. After using them, I researched the topic on the internet, the weight that must be added to a clubhead to increase distance, and speed maintained, and you just cannot achieve greater distance like that. I must say the owner of the weight site was very nice to deal with, and did deliver a quality item. I found it most useful just to increase the swingweight a bit, that's about it (subsequently switched to Ping G5 anyway). Hope that helps.
