Super Game Improvement, Game improvement, or Player's irons.

What category of irons should I look for when I’m upgrading my current set, super game improvement, game improvement, or player’s clubs?

Profile: I’m playing to an 8 handicap presently. My home course where I play 95% of my golf has small greens. My GIR statistic is not great but I believe it’s because of the smallish greens that I play on. I do however believe my iron play is the weakest part of my game. I’ll be getting a partial set, 5-pw, I like to play fairway woods in place of the long irons.

I plan on getting fitted, but I don't want to be steered in the wrong direction.

Any ideas?

if you don't play 2,3,or 4 irons then get players clubs. they have more playability and better feel.

If your an 8 HC you can play what ever you want. If you want better feel and to work the ball easier get the players clubs. If not get anything you want.

Hey Snowman,

I'm an 8 and until last Saturday I carried 4 hybrid woods and 7 thru wedges in irons.......but that changed in a hurry!

Saturday the Cleveland Tour Van was out at a local range and I got a chance to hit the new Hibore Hybrid irons. WOW !!! I bought 'em on the spot!!!

I went to my club and played 9 holes, then played 18 on Sunday. I used to hit 22*, 24*, and 26* degree hybrids on long approach shots...and loved them. But with the new Hibores, the long irons are not only giving me the same carry, they launch HIGHER and STICK when they hit the green! I went with the hybrid woods in the first place because they were so easy to hit, but the Hibore Hybrid irons are even EASIER to hit....and control!!!

You really should at least give 'em a "test drive".

Thanks Mr. Billinoc. I haven't even considered Hybrid irons. I'll give them a look.

Man those Hibore's make you feel like you're in a cartoon though, big and bulky, not much feel. They go straight but you feel like you're at the mercy of the club. Don't get me wrong though, I couldn't stop laughing they're so fun to hit, you can even try to jerk with your swing a little and they still fly straight. I went with the CG-4's though and have been extremely happy with results, and I'm still able to feel like I'm putting some effort into the swing, lol.

Snowman8, take a look at the Adam's Idea Pro Forged Iron set. You can get a set with 3-PW (all irons) or a 5-PW set w/ 3 and 4 iron hybrids. Haven't personally hit the irons, yet, but I have hit the Idea Pro hyrbids and they are one of my favourite hybrids to date...little offset, great stock shaft, amazing feel and feedback!
Also, I've read on other forums that people highly recommend the irons in this set too. They are a player's cavity back, so you get feedback thats better than GI or SuperGI clubs, yet you still have some forgiveness.

Snowman what are you hitting currently? An 8 HC is pretty good IMO. You may want to look into a combo set. If you still wanr some feel look for something Forged. I don't think I will ever go back to a cast set. Adams is the Leader in the GI type of irons if that is the route you want to go.

I'm currently hitting a set of steel shafted Gravity Back Cobras, approximately 6 years old. My handicap is decent due mainly because of my putter and chipping. It may also be deflated because I play almost entirely at one course, so I know every nook and cranny on the greens, and where not to be.
