Did you happen to see the infomercial today on the golf channel? I was watching this during my lunch today at home due to nothing else being on. How much are they even, $100 or so? Personally, I have no experience with them though.

I know a couple PGA pros who swear by them. They use them before every round.

Yeah, i know PGA pros use them, but i mean their swings are perfect, i dont know if i can believe that it helps me square the club face at impact and keeps it on plain, but i know it tells you your swing speed and you can check your improvement.

I have one. My distance has improved, but I think that is more from making solid contact and working on my game than the speed stik. It is great for warming up, though. I was lucky enough to pick mine up at a yard sale for 10 bucks. I definitely wouldn't pay more than 20 bucks for this thing. I think you could get the same help from a wooden baseball bat and the discipline to swing it every day.

Look for deals on these, not worth top price.
It is a good aid for warming up, but the speed rating is the main feature. It's helped me because you realise the 'swoosh' has to be right at impact, highlighting the importance of the release of your hands through the ball. I now know I can swing easier and get greater speed from releasing my hands through impact without trying to kill the ball. Nice when you see your swing speed go up too.

It will do neither of those things. That being said, I have one and I think it's a pretty cool device for strengthening and stretching golf muscles.

Or you could go to the store and buy one of those cheap wicker brooms and swing that... I've tried the speed stick and the broom does just as much if not more since there's some air resistance down through the impact zone.

I just saw part of the infomercial for the Speedstick the other day while channel surfing. I thought to myself, that the swing speed gauge was the hook and if it wasn't there, they'd have nothing to sell. At least not for $100, anyway.

I suggest just swinging a heavy club.

I made one out of an old 4-iron. I loaded the back of the clubhead with about a dozen or more strips of lead tape, then I poured some powdered lead down the shaft about halfway and corked it. The club swingweights over "H" and although I've never weighed it, I'll bet it's easily over a pound or two.

I use it as a warmup club and it works well as a swing aid. Nice and even tempo, makes the big muscles work like they're supposed to and it feels real smooth. After working out with this, it feels like I could swing a regular club at 130 mph.

It's effectve, it conditions muscles, it builds tempo and it's all for the cost of a few strips of lead tape and some powder.

Pennies.

But it doesn't have a swing speed gauge.

Oh well.

Any worries that the load on the shaft may be too high and could result in breakage? I thought about putting lead down the shaft, but didn't want to take a chance that the shaft would break. I considered the possibilility of using a 2nd shaft and epoxying it inside the first shaft, in order to beef up the shaft strength prior to the addition of lead/tungsten powder. I thought about buying a Wilson Fat Shaft iron and putting a taper tip (or even a 1950s era) shaft inside.

Any thoughts?

Glfrjack,

I don't see any problems with loads.

Of course, I'm not hitting balls with this club, but that's not what it's meant to do. It's just meant to be a swing aid is all.

But I'd bet that if I wanted to, I could hit balls with it and not worry about it.

I'm considering making one you can hit balls with. I figure that by doubling up on the shaft, it will maintain it's flex and not get too soft due to the added weight. I guess I have a project to work on...

I got to swing one in the store one time. It's neat cause i had no idea how fast my Swing speed was until then. I guess it would be neat to have that visual readout while trying different swings to see how fast you can swing, but this is prolly the same thing as seeing how far you can whack one at the driving range.
