Leadbetter club fitter told me to go cavity

Hi all,

I just returned from Champions Gate, Orlando where I had a Leadbetter club fitter give me the once over. I hadn't played since Thanksgiving (I live in the great, yet frozen, northeast) and my swing was pathetic. My USGA handicap card says 3.9, but I think each Spring I'm closer to a 12, and when I played the International course I shot 45 on the front before waking up and managing a 37 on the back. Anyway-- the Club fitter gave me some sobering news. My efficiency was in the 1.35 to 1.45 range with the 5-iron and consistently in the 1.45 range with the driver. My speed with the irons was near 90mph and the driver just over 100. Basically, I was shocked to learn my carry was 20 to 40 yds less than I ever imagined and came away from the experienced determined to get my swing back in order, and to purchase a new set of irons with a bigger sweet spot. The club fitter said, "Go cavity, young man!"

Now, being a lover of my Mizuno MP-14's, and always feeling that I hit them well most of the time, I was a bit crestfallen. After looking at the stats on the laptop I realized I missed the vicinity of the sweet spot about 50% of the time-- ouch. He said the sweet spot on the 14's was about the size of a dime.

He then gave me some Callaway X-20's, I think (new prototype?), and I still missed the sweet spot 50% of the time, but the ball found the green, or very near it, despite that depressing fact.

Finally, I've decided to find a Mizuno iron with the following specs: forged, thin top line, little to no offset, larger sweet spot (at least quarter-sized!), and perhaps even cavity back. MP32, 67, 60, MX25, ....

Does anyone know if the cut-muscle blades are actually blades or truly more forgiving regarding sweet spot, etc?? Any advice greatly appreciated-- TIA

The MP 60's would probably fit the bill for you. They are very sweet feeling, have low offset, a relatively thin topline, and are a nice mid-position between a blade and a full cavity back. They are more forgiving than they look, but still provide plenty of feedback. Definitely worth a demo.

Thanks,

I've been trying to find the specifications on my MP-14's to compare to the 60's. I can not seem to find a full set of specs, including offsets and bounce. Is there a website anyone can suggest which allows searching full specs on various club sets?

Thanks again,

Donzi

The site I've been using doesn't have offset or bounce for the MP14's. It does show them for the MP60's. Maybe because of the age of the MP14's relative to the age of the website? Anyway, here's the link if you haven't aready been there:

I never knew anyone who cared much about bounce on anything but the wedges..

I was under the impression that the width of the sole was related to the bounce angle. High bounce in a wedge, I thought, means wide soul. Weird thing is many of the more "forgiving" club heads have small bounce angles. My 14's have the sole width of about a razor blade and I've always wondered if this lack in sole width made it more difficult to make great contact. The 60's have lower bounce angles than the 67's-- I wish I knew the sole widths. I have my specs (14's) but seem to have misplaced them, along with my head.
