Nike issues recall for square-headed driver
http://www.azcentral.com/sports/golf...recall-ON.html
Nike Inc.'s golf division has issued a voluntary recall for its square-shaped Sasquatch Sumo2 driver because a "small percentage" of clubheads don't conform to the sport's rules, the company said.........

COR violations? Do they actually say what the "non-conforming" problem is?
edit* "ball speed off the club face" sounds like a COR problem to me. Thoughts from those who understand all this are welcome, I'm sure.

This link has a bit more technical detail:

Nike Golf will offer replacements of its new, square-shaped Nike Sumo2 driver, due to what it calls an "unauthorized manufacturing variance."
That's one way of putting it!

I'm not a fan of Nike, but I believe they would do nothing to intentionally jeopardize their reputation. It wouldn't be worth it to manufacture a limited number of clubs which intentionally do not conform to USGA specifications, and sell them in the US as conforming clubs. Manufacturing problems do occur, and with their heads being manufactured in China... who's to say some wheel at the manufacturing plant didn't decide to "ease off" on the specs a bit to save a nickel. If that happened, Nike will probably have someone's head on a stick for it. If it was purely accidental, I'm surprised that someone's QC department didn't catch it before any of them made it out the door.

I am pretty sure that it is unintentional also. I guess they are pushing the limits so hard that there is a risk of a proportion of of the manufactured clubs falling out of spec.. I wonder if they test every head after it is made.

The only company I ever heard of doing that was Golfsmith. They did it when they intentionally exceeded both USGA, and the old R&A limits on COR. They tested every head for structural integrity, but not for COR. The only reason they did it was because they were afraid of someone with a true 120mph swing speed getting one of the heads, and it basically exploding when the ball was hit. That was a few years back.

Having worked as a "blue print machinist", I can tell you that it's next to impossible to build a driver with a cor that is exaxtly .830. What you do is try to get it close, like maybe .825, and then you set a limit of plus or minus .005 . That way you shouldn' go over .830, and you shouldn't go under .820. From what little I've read, it sounds like Nike cut it a little too close on the .830 limit, and some of the heads went a little over. That doesn't surprise me too much, when you figure it doesn't take much to change the COR of a driver. I'm wonder how long it will be before golfers will be out there looking to find one of those "out of spec" driver. I can see a bib market for them with golfers looking for a few more yards off the tee. Unless you play in a USGA tourniment, who would know?

I've used the SUMO 2 since the first day they came out.....yeah, it's loud.....but the main "noise" I always notice is my playing partners going "WOW" every time my ball launches down the MIDDLE of the faiway!
I think it's a great thing Nike is doing...not ALL the SUMO's are non-compliant, but they are willing to spend MILLIONS to make sure their customers are treated fairly.
Whatever the product, be it a golf club or a television, ANY company that is willing to "Step-Up" and take care of their customers will always KEEP my business!!!
