Hybrid Distance VS Fairway Wood Distance

Hello,

I have been looking recently into adding a hybrid club to my bag. I hit my irons pretty good but I was looking for something to fill the gap between my 3 wood and 3 iron. I dont carry a 5 wood, just a driver and 3 wood. I was wondering what your distances and gaps were between maybe a 2i hybrid or 1i hybrid and a 3 wood. I hit my 3 wood about 235-240 and my 3 iron 210. So I guess I am looking for something that might put me in the 220-225 yard range so that I can use it when I play some of the longer courses in the area. I have thought about a regular 2 iron but why go through trying to learn to hit that when there are these beautiful hybrids out that would help more. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Given that the gap you are trying to fill is not huge, and that there is no reliable way of predicting how far exactly you might hit a third club variety (between the woods and the irons), I think you have no real choice but to demo some hybrids, alternating shots between the hybrid, 3-wood and 3-iron, to make sure that the hybrid actually fills the gap.

Traditionally, a three wood has a loft of 15 degrees and these days a 3 iron is around 21-22 degrees. I would agree with straightshooter there in that you will need to hit some balls and make sure they are falling into the gap as desired, but I'd start my search with some clubs of lofts around 18 degrees. Part of the reason you really want to hit them to make sure, rather than just ordering an 18 degree hybrid, is that some are high launching, some are low launching, the loft does not tell the entire story.

as far as length of club...generally a hybrid with about 18 degrees of loft would be shorter than a traditional wood of equal loft? or is this bogus? thanks.

My 18* hybrid is only about 10 yards shorter than my 19* 5 wood, but the distance difference does exist.
