i thinking of buying a new driver i hit the nike sumo and like it but waiting on hitting the callaway fti . i just dont like the sound of the nike but hit it down the middle. i waiting on the left handle callaway to come out.does anybody know when they will be out.how do they compair.
From what I have read they both are not "boomers" but they are great for control. I tried one of each in the golf shop the when they came out.
Nike was much louder ( too loud for me) but the stiff shaft was pretty responsive. It has a longer shaft as well.
The FTi had a more subdued sound (though good) but the stiff shaft did not suit me.
I qualified this as I liked the FTi better, they store had only the one demo to try and Callaway has many shaft choices so another shaft would have made a real difference for my swing.
Bottom line, if you want control these are a great option.
I've had my SUMO 2 since day one and love it. I can't understand why the general thought consenses is that it doesn't hit long? When you play it on the COURSE, not in shop, it's amazing how much longer it really is. I think the fact that it goes so darn straight allows you to gradually take a bigger swing at the ball? All I know is I am hitting it an honest 20 yards further than I was hitting my R7 460....and I really liked that club!
A friend of mine has the FT-i and I have hit it as well...a REALLY great club! My best advice would be to find a course that has some for demo's and hit them on the course...indoor ranges and driving ranges just don't give you enough feedback when it comes to REAL playing conditions.
The biggest difference is the size of the head. The SUMO 2 head is very big, but EXTREMELY light. You will find the FT-i head size is smaller...even smaller than a conventional 460cc head. It's about the size of a TM 425, so it's going to be a matter of personal preference for you. When I was hitting his FT-i my drives were long too. The "forgivness" of these two clubs allow you really "GO AT THE BALL", thus producing longer AND straighter drives!

And I have the same impression with my Callaway FTi. It is as long as it needs to be... here in Colorado I can easily carry the ball 260+ yards. I have documented it at 295 with roll... and that with a 100 MPH swing speed. I've already created a lot of interest in it with several guys I've played with the last week. Most try a shot with it... talk about how weird/ugly it looks at address... then they hit a ball and the comments change to Wow!... That feels great!... etc.
I'm more consistent with the FTi than I've been with any other big headed driver... And it doesn't sound like 2 pipes being clanked together.
I have the Nike. My first impressions (at the range) is that I'm getting a nice high ball flight, better control (a slight fade vs a big fade), and OK distance (can't really judge on the range).
Now about the noise. I never thought when I hit it at the store that the noise would bother me. It doesn't bother me. The people around me on the other hand is a different story. Today at the range I got nothing but dirty stares. On top of that, a little girl at the range with her dad and brother broke out crying from the noise (I'm not joking!). I was so embarrased. Granted these people won't be on the course with me, but still it was an issue today.
Bottom line from me, its a nice driver. Straighter than my R7 HT (original one) with the weights in the draw position. Just as long I think. Louder than anything I've hit on a golf course.

Hi- what do you think is creating that extra 20 yards?? What is the loft of your current and previous club, and what is the shaft length. Without going to an inch longer shaft and different loft, I cannot imagine any club going 20 yards farther than the Taylor 460 except if it was setup completly improperly for you, or your skills or strength have increased. Thanks for the info.
I hate the look of them both (cant seem to get that feel for a square club).... the sound of the NIKE just takes it out of the running for me though. I would take anything over the NIKE woods. Never thought I would let sound make my decision, but it truly does. The NIKE sounds like a Hollow rock.
Sorry not much help here, but I am waiting on next years Drivers.... I hear they are trying something new... ROUND
I hit the Sumo2 square-head driver in the fairway and carry 280. Who cares about the sound of the explosion.... with those results. I only missed 2 fairways over the last round and the misses were still long and playable.
I have the FT-i and my head pro has the New Nike Sumo. They are both very long. I could hear a noticeable difference in the new Nike Sumo vs. the old one. It isn't nearly as loud. Obviously, it has to suit you, but I LOVE my FT-i. It is by far the longest and straightest driver I have ever hit.
I currently use and LOVE the Callaway FTI driver. It's long and the straightest driver I've ever hit. Like it much more than the Nike which I had owned and sold.
Lot's of people are hitting the FTi well. Personally, the club looks akward to me from address (I think due to the face being slightly ahead of the hosel) and I actually like the Nike better. Both clubs sound loud, but the Nike is louder.
