Is my Club Head Speed Too Fast?

Hey everyone. I am a pretty decent golfer. 16 years old. Today I was at Golf Galaxy trying out drivers (ended up getting the new Titleist 907 D2). Anyways. On average they clocked me around 155 mph. A lot of times even over 160 mph. I know this is way above average, but its a very natural swing. Should I be trying to slow this down, or is this normal? Insight is greatly appreciated, as this is the first time I ever clocked my club head speed.

That is incredibly fast! Are you sure it wasn't ball speed?

If it is (controlled) clubhead speed you should enter in some long-drive competitions.

On good contact I usually get 300 yards (my longest is 319). I dont know about contests for kids my age, but I dont think that my drives are long enough. Maybe if I could get a coach to help me with contact, etc..

Long-drive competitions are a special 'sub-sport' with specialized training, equipment etc.. If you think you might be into that give it some thought, because with a 150 mph club-head speed at 16 you definitely have talent for it!

"The driver swing speed of an average lady golfer is 62mph; 96mph for an average LPGA professional; 84mph for an average male golfer; 108mph for an average PGA Tour player; 130mph for Tiger Woods; 148-152mph for a national long drive champion."

i think that was your ball speed...
which is a pretty good ball speed nonetheless.

Thanks for that information ^

I apologize. It may seem that I am lying or something, but I guess I just saw it wrong at the thing. I could have sworn that the guy said club head speed, but now I know the truth. Id still love to hear more about this long drive stuff. 300 yards at 16 seems like a good start probably. Got interested last night when I saw Jack Hamm in action. (453 yard drive. Insane, eh?)

Jack Hamm is the biggest crock in golf. His clubs get the worst reviews ever. Google long drive golf if want to find out more

OTD,

I second that you were looking at your ball speed. If you were swinging upwards of 160 you would have found the driver face would cave in (unless built for LD). What you were looking at was ball speed which was very good btw. If I were to guess I would say that your SS is somewhere in the ball park of 108-112mph (your average should be just shy of 300).

As for the Long Drive competitions you would have to get your swing speed up another 25mph to have a shot. Jamie Sladowski (17) won the juniors last year with a driver of 420 yards and his SS is right around 145-155.

Jack Hamm is bull***. I haven't seen him win anything, and his commercial for the "Hammer" driver is bull*** too. I think that thing is illegal.

I am 14 years old and my swing speed is clocked at 116 mph average. I hit the ball over 315 on a good drive with my ping g5, I am very surprised I swing faster than the average pga tour player. I am going to continue to keep training and maybe by the time I reach 17 I will be at around 130 or more !

Wow. That is very impressive! Are you swinging 'all out' when you get that speed, or is it a nice smooth controlled swing? I am pretty sure that most PGA players can swing the club faster than they do, but they have to worry about minor details such as their score (), so they turn it down a little bit in favor of their 'accuracy statistics etc.'!

Kinda in the middle in between really smooth and killing it, the trick to a fast swing speed is to have the right degree of wrist cock and you have to generate alot of energy through your lower body especially your hips and you also have to create an incredible ammount of lag with the club, this creates a whipping motion

about the jack hamm hammer im pretty sure that the material used in it is illegal and im not sure if the size is conforming either. if he could learn to putt and use a real driver he would be the new happy gilmore. either way he can crush a ball period. right now im driving around 285 with a 108 mph swing. if i give it everything gets out to about 300 but at the exspense of usually not being were i want to.

Re: Is my Club Head Speed Too Fast?

If your club head speed is 150 mph, you should enter some long drive contests. Tour players average about 118. Tiger averages about 125.
