I've been lurking for a long time, but had to register to ask..
I'm in the market for new irons and while browsing at a shop I struck up a conversation with one of the reps. He indicated that the Adams A2 OS are fantastic clubs and really underrated in their quality for the price. When I asked him, though, he said he plays Nike irons.
Everywhere I look, I see nothing but incredibly positive reviews and comments about recent Adams clubs, but it seems like you need a search warrant to find someone who plays their equipment (especially their irons).
So -- if Adams is such a well regarded company, why does it seem like everyone who lauds them has something else in their bag?
I know 4 people who plays Adams equipment. They all love the equipment, and I see alot of it one courses in my area especially with the senior golfers.
I play the Adams Ovation 3-Wood, and Tight Lies 7-Wood. I've never tried their irons.
Outside of my PING Tess putter, my favorite long stick is my Tight Lies Strong 7. I have gone
thru 3 other fairway woods of various brands and keep going back to the old standby TL7.
The Ovation is a very long and accurate fairway wood. I used to have the Tight Lies 3-Wood,
but my brother-in-law liked it so much I had to give it to him. Keeps him playing!
I don't think I'll ever get rid of the Tight Lies club. It's the easiest club in my bag.
I do have my eye on that new Insight FW.. sweet looking club.
gppgolf.com have the Puglielli wedges on special for $50, I just bought a few of them. These are great wedges. Awesome sticks. Love there hybrids and rescue woods too
all my woods are Adams, and i like them.....i find the driver very forgiving, i'm currently in the market for a titleist 905 though, i just seem to hit it a little farther......never tried the irons though
I think the reason why people don't use Adams irons is because a lot of golfers like to stick to brands they've been using. if you have Mizuno irons and like them the next set you get will probably be Mizuno. i think as people start to demo Adams irons more people will start using them. since they are relatively new to the iron game it will take them a while to become popular
I think it has more to do with tour presence. People generally play equipment that wins the most (ie: nike, callaway, titleist, taylormade). I believe that in the champions tour, Adams reigns supreme, but, honestly...most people want to be Tiger not Doyle. Now, please understand I'm not trying to demean the champions tour in any which way...those gentleman are incredible athletes. I'm just stating what I perceive to be the main reason Adams equipment is not played more widely.
I bought a new set of the Adams A2's last year (not the A2 OS). I love them! They have a very solid feel and are very forgiving. Best of all are the hybrid 3 and 4 irons. I played with them a lot last summer and went from a 26 handicap to 11. I was thinking about buying new irons this spring (just because... well, you know) but I keep coming back to the fact that I love my Adams. I also carry Adams Tight Lies 3 and 5 woods. I'm not as crazy about those as my irons though. My driver is TaylorMade.
I play Adams Idea pros myself and they are awesome clubs. The hybrid is one of the best in the game. Overall they have a clean look and feel even better.
I've actually heard one person comment that he would never buy their equipment because he doesn't like the name. His quote went something like "Adams is such a dumb and unappealing name for golf clubs, stuff like Callaway, Nike, or Cobra, sound so much cooler."
So there you can see there are many reasons, even some that are more to the ridiculous side.
I never had an Adams club until last year when I picked up a 4060 fairway wood. It is the greatest fairway wood I have ever it and it kicked my Sonartec SS-02 right outta the bag. Super solid feel, great look at address and is very easy to elevate off the deck despite the deeper face which also allows me to use it off the tee and out of the rough. I now have both an 18* and 16* and rotate between them depending on the course and weather conditions.
I've been playing Adams UC-10 irons for the past 2 years.
I went to Myrtle Beach that February with the family in tow to check out some property. I had no intention of playing golf as it was still down in the low 30s every morning. After 2 days of moping around, my wife got tired of me complaining about not bringing my clubs and told me to go buy some; but that I could only spend $500 max for everything.
Golf Dimensions had these irons 3-SW and a stand bag for $199. Then I bought a Tommy Armour 835 Metal Persimmon driver and 3w for $100, a Square Two putter for $20, and a $25 pair of Dunlop shoes. After balls, towels, gloves and such, I was still well below my limit.
It was 32* when I teed off the next morning.
Well, the driver and 3w are available to a good home if anybody wants them, but the irons have stayed in the bag. They have a little more offset than I prefer, but are easy to hit and can still be worked to a certain degree. Now days you can find them used for about $50.
