mens vs. womens clubs

Is there any difference between mens and womens clubs besides the flex of the shaft and maybe sometimes the color?

You are partially correct in assuming ladies clubs have a different shaft and in some cases, different designs, however, the primary difference is in the shaft itself and the shaft length. Generally speaking, ladies clubs are one inch shorter than men's clubs and there is also a "petite" length which is about an inch shorter than the ladies clubs, but longer than the junior length clubs.

Now, as to a standard length of any club, it is well to stay away from this topic because you will get a wide variety of "standard" lengths. For example, my accepted standard length of a pitching wedge is 36 inches, however, when I trim a PW shaft butt, I cut it about 35 and 5/8 inches to allow for the grip end and tape to round it out to 36 inches. I'm sure every club maker will be all over this, but I've had good luck with this standard.

As to design, I deal with a component supplier who had the cavity of routine irons trimmed in with "pink" instead of the normal black and gold and - you guessed it - they can't keep them in stock. Women are taking all they can get, including my wife!!!

Hope this helps.

I also believe shaft lengths are shorter in addition to the shaft flex differences.

There's a whole lot more to women's clubs these days than making them shorter and painting them pink! I'm thrilled to say that some manufacturers now take into account the different swing style of women and adjust the angles accordingly as well as modifying resistance and weight.
A very good source on the latest and greatest improvements can be found in Golf for Women (Ladies Golf Digest) magazine.
