Need Your Help With Shaft Experiences...

I’m currently using a Callaway 454 10* driver with their stock “firm” flex shaft (in actuality it probably specs out to other after market “regular” shafts). My swing speed is right around 90-92mph, my tempo is smooth/medium, I catch the ball on the upswing and my ball position is inside of left heel. I REALLY like this driver since I hit it pretty straight but the ball trajectory is too high (but it doesn’t “balloon”). I know the shaft has a soft tip and promotes a higher ball trajectory. On average my carry is right around 235yrds but without much roll (maybe another 10-15yrds). I played last night with this guy that had a Titleist (can’t remember the model) 7.5 degree driver with a NV65 shaft. His carry was a bit shorter than mine but his roll-out was much longer. I’m wondering what to expect (distance, side spin and back spin) by going to a mid trajectory shaft? I’m not asking for an answer to my question but I’m looking for your personal experiences going from a stock or aftermarket high/mid trajectory shaft to a mid/low trajectory shaft. If you can give me the before and after shaft along with what changed to your ball flight and distance that would be great appreciated.

Thanks!

psgolf,

I am no expert but my experience has taught me that stiffer flex shafts by default have higher flex points or kick points than more responsive or whippier shafts. Higher flex points bias toward lower trajectory ball flight. So a stiffer shaft by default provides lower ball flight.

Shaft weight has a similar effect. As shaft weight increases ball flight tends to lower. Nick Price once talked about using 110 gram shafts on his driver to keep his ball flight lower.

The challenge is to find the right shaft flex and weight that is most comfortable for you that provides the optimal ball flight, distance and control you desire.

Good luck.

Cool

psgolf; You're getting 250 yard drives with a 90MPH swing speed, and you're complaining? That's about all you can hope for at 90MPH. What you need to do is get on a launch monitor and measure your launch anlge and backspin rate before you decide you have any problems to fix. You also need to take a sleeve of balls with you when you do this to see if maybe a different ball would help to reduce the backspin and allow the ball to roll out more. Try another ball on the course next time out and see if that changes things. You also stated that the ball "doesnt' balloon". That tells me that there's a good chance your ball flight is not too high. With your ball speed, I'd recommend a launch angle of at least 15 degrees.

This is not always true. Some shafts have the same bend point for all the flexes in that model of shaft. You need to read the spec for any shaft you might be thinking of getting to see if the bend point is different for one flex vs, another.
