face discoloration on forged Irons
I am looking at a few different sets of used irons on Ebay, and I was wondering if the discolouration on Forged irons is a problem? Will it effect play? Can it be removed? What causes it?
Any help would be appreciated.

Shouldn't make any real difference in the playability of the clubs but can effect the sharpness of the grooves. The way Forged Blades are made makes it so the plating eventually wears thin. Some players use this as a badge of honor. You can also tell a lot about the swing and player based on the wear. Bottom line is that its only a cosmetic issue. You could also send the clubs back for a refinish if you wanted to. The manufacture will usually refurbish the heads to new for a fee.

Forged irons are all chrome plated, so they shouldn't have any dis-coloration. NOW, if the heads had been removed and the person doing this heated the heads up too much, that might cause the head to dis-color, and that could be a problem. Too much heat can ruin any thing made of steel. so I'd be careful when buying irons with dis-coloration. Especilly off Ebay.

Ive seen plenty of forged irons where the ball striking area was "discolored" or kind of brown/rusty looking. The chrome plating has worn thin from hitting the ball over and over. This is perfectly normal and as long as the grooves are deep and sharp has no effect whatsoever on playability. Again, perfectly normal, and if you buy a set of new forged irons it will eventually happen to yours. The chrome should, however, still be shiny on the rest of the club head where it has not hit the ball. You will also find that forged clubs ding up much easier than cast ones so they may be dulled somewhat from bag clatter (banging on other clubs)

It looks like the only discolouration is where the club strikes the ball. Your feedback helps put my mind at ease.
