Re: Golf Balls & Club Head Speed

According to the swing monitor at Golf Galaxy, 5 out of 7 balls hit with a driver my clubhead speed was between 92 & 96 mph. However, I'm not an aggressive iron player like I am with a driver. Very seldom do I hit a full iron shot, I'll usually take the next club up and lay off it a little bit meaning my clubhead speed with a 5 iron is going to be considerably less as compared to average 5 iron speeds.

But you haven't mentioned anything about what is the defition of "GOOD" for you. If you need the ball to check up on the green, you may need a higher spin ball because you're not hitting it hard. If you need pure distance, you may not beat Pinnacle with any other balls. What helps you to score may mean something else. In any case, being the most important factor in golf scoring is a short game, IMO, I recommend you to find a ball that you like ( Feel, Logo, Distance whatever ) and use them all the time ( Not just Brand ( i.e. Nike ) but a specific model (i.e. One Black )).
Predictability in short game, I think, is most underated aspect of Golf but most important.

Cheers!

Either way, this time is small enough that for any meaningful discussion impact is instantaneous. It is impossible to make any corrections in the last seconds, because it takes your nerves at least 0.01 seconds before they even detect that impact has occured. The ball is many feet away before you even feel anything regarding an impact. Meaning that it is impossible to try to correct something regrding the impact, because by the time you have felt impact the ball is long gone and completely out of your control.
Haha, you made that up. I'm thinking 5-8 degrees of bonus swing turn ( at its most crucial club alignment moments ) occurs with a low compression ball. I'd be willing to bet.

What are you willing to bet? I am willing to bet quite an awful lot on the facts as I wrote them.

Read Cochran & Stobbs' Search for the Perfect Swing. There are slow motion videos on the internet, too, that show just how small of a time impact really is. The time is takes for nerves to register has been known for some time too. It is just physcially impossible -- the ball is several feet away before your nerves even register than an impact has occured.

.

I use the Nike One Platinum but most of the time I feel as though my swing speed is not high enough to get the full potential of the ball. One of the courses I play at in league is very hard so I need something that spins. The platinum has done well for me off the tee but as far as getting it to check on a green has been difficult and I rely on my short game to score. On a softer course the ball works for me in all aspects. So what I am looking for is a ball that spins more than the platinum with a lower club head speed. I don't have the money to go buy 4 brands of golf balls so having some input would be very beneficial to me. Balls I have tried: Cally HX Hot, NXT & NXT Tour, Nike SFT2, Srixon Z-UR. Out of these the HX Hot felt the best (softest) off the face, but did not perform the way I need it to.

I would like to try the ProV1 but I can't drop the cheese for them :)

Re: Golf Balls & Club Head Speed

flybob, if you want a ball that spins greatly then the HX tour 56 can't be beat. For an all-around good ball that is inexpensive then the precept laddie extreme is a really good ball that is only 19.99 for 2 dozen. In a golf ball test I read they took a bunch of the different brands commonly used on courses and Pro V 1 came out on top with the laddie extreme coming in second above Nike, Callaways or Srixon premium balls. The HX hot is great with irons for distance but to me it plays like a rock and feels like one and doesn't accept spin very well. Rule of thumb for good spin balls is if it leaves some cover material in the grooves it doesn't like to accept spin and if no cover material is in the grooves it takes spin better. Of course freshly sharpened grooves can peel material off probably most balls but generally not for long. A couple of shots out of sand generally does the trick on grooves.

Re: Golf Balls & Club Head Speed

at 270-280, that's pretty good, tour average even.

I can carry anywhere between 230-250 and then depending on the fairway or rough another 10-15 yds at most. I know that my swing speed is between 92 and 96 mph, and have been over 100 in the past... I use Pro V's in tournaments and the extras until their gone. I usually get about 5 rounds out of a sleeve of Pro V's. I'm cheap though, as I usually get a couple dozen from caddying at a Canadian tour event every year, and a dozen each from the wife and her parents, so 4 dozen last me around 80 rounds....I'll play NXT's after that or in scramble's when you try the stupidist things!

Most 400 yard par 4's holes, I still have 140 - 160 left, so that tells me 240-260 yards would be what I hit the driver, and definately not all carry.

We have a 258 yard par 4 over water that I've been on 4-5 times this year with driver. I have yet to make an eagle, so I'll take my chances with a wedge to make birdie over a possible double...(after that twice I figure it's not worth it!!) Although par feels like a bogie on that hole....
