I was curious how many people have bought the new TaylorMade Burner and why. For me, I am thinking about buying it because I have a fade and I hit the ball low. This driver seemed to be the best at controlling my fade and hit the ball higher. It also seems to be a lot more forgiving than my current driver. If you have the Burner, what type also (TP or regular). TaylorMade seems to have something with this driver, at least for me.
I have only tested it at the driving range. I plan on trading my current driver in for this. When I do and get a few rounds under my belt, I'll also give a review.
I just replaced my Titleist 905R 9.5 with a Burner TP 8.5degree. Was custom fit with Taylor Made Tour type van? I never thought I would go lower with loft but with there stockl shaft the Launch Monitor numbers were excellent. I had it made 3/4 shorter and they made sure the swignweight and flex remained. Best driver I have hit in awhile.
Here is a review that I put up on another site that answered some questions the starter of the topic had concerning the Burner TP, hope it helps.
1. Is the stock shaft too long or people are just complaining about it when it is still manageable?
The Burner TP shaft comes at a stock length of 45.5", so it is not as long as the regular Burner at 46". The 45.5" length is a bit long, but due to the stability of the head, you can get away with the extra length and get fairly consistent results.
2. Has anyone tried custom ordering the stock shaft at a shorter length and how did it perform?
No, I haven't.
3. If you don't like the stock shaft, which other shafts have you tried on the Burner head? Did it go well with the head?
I have the Diamana White Board shaft in the Burner TP head and it performs better than the stock shaft for me.
4. How do you like the sound of the club head?
The club sounds good at impact, a bit deeper than the sound of the SuperQuad.
5. Is there much difference between the 50g and the 65g stock shaft?
Yes, there is a huge difference, the 50 gram shaft is a lot like the Fit on S.I.X. shaft which was a 53 gram tour level shaft. The 65 gram is a Graphite Design Pershing shaft.
6. Burner has a heavy swing weight. How did this effect your drive?
I actually increased the swing weight more than it was, it is at a D5, this allows me to let the club do a lot of the work. The heavier swing weight brings the club head through the impact zone easily.
7. Does the STIFF flex feel more like REGULAR flex compared to other shafts? I heard a lot of stiff flex users ordered x-flex 'cause it was whippy compared to other shafts.
Didn't hit the stock shaft long enough to get a good read on this. The reason it would feel whippy is due to the longer length of the shaft.
8. If you do own a Burner TP driver, would you also buy a Burner fairway?
Absolutely not, the Burner steel fairway wood has a huge head, just doesn't appeal to me at all.
I was one of the people that was very skeptical about the Burner driver from the moment that I heard about the club and saw pictures. The TP has a much better look than the regular head, a bit shorter front to back and a deeper face and a square face angle. The graphics on the crown also seemed as though they would be a bit of a distraction, I like a very clean look at address and the thought of seeing the white markings on the top did not appeal to me at all. Out in the sunlight, the graphics are not as noticable at address, so that eased my concerns on that.
Thanks for the info so far. At this point, based on the launch monitor, I am looking at getting the regular (not TP) with the stock stiff shaft. I am a little concerned about the longer shaft length but it does go straight for me. I hit a bit of a fade / slice so the slightly closed face does help keep it straight for me.
Also, the head is big on it. I have the 905R and the Burner is definitely bigger than the 905 but still feels good at address.
So I went to the driving range again and demo'd the Burner a second time. Not quite as good as the first. I snap hooked a couple and could not seem to hit the sweet spot. On the other hand, my 905R was straight as an arrow and I was consistently hitting the sweet spot. A complete reversal of late last week. It could be because I just got done riding 156 miles over the weekend in the MS 150 so my legs and arms are worn out. I'll go back again tomorrow to try again before I buy it.
So tmtp, what do you think of the reax shaft compared to another one? I know it is supposed to all fit into a single system for the non TP version but I am curious if the 46 in length of the shaft is going to cause me problems hitting the sweet spot consistently. I'm 5'8. Looking at the launch monitor numbers, the spin rate, launch angle, and ball speed are pretty consistent, but I wonder about accuracy with the longer shaft.
I can't really answer too well on the 46" shaft since the TP version comes stock at 45.5" and I didn't even hit it with the stock shaft, went right to the Diamana White Board. Due to the head dimensions and the inverted cone technology, the effective MOI is said to be almost at the USGA limit for MOI of 5900 grams/cm2, so it is very forgiving. The longer shaft will give you a few more miles per hour of club head speed, but you want to make sure that there is consistent center contact to really take advantage of that.
OK. So I went to the range another couple times. I'm not sure if it is just the extra length of the shaft (46 vs my current 44.5) or the fact that I am getting used to my 905R, but I just couldn't seem to hit the sweet spot consistently with the burner and I was hitting too many hooks with it. For me personally, since I just bought the 905R a couple months ago, I'm going to stick with it. Maybe later I'll go to the golf store and try out some different shafts in the Burner. I do like it, but just can't justify losing the money I'm going to lose in my 905R and spend the extra money on the Burner. Of the newer clubs, it is definitely the one I like the most though. If I would have just waited another month or so before buying a driver, I probably would have gotten the Burner.
