I swung a few irons at my local pro shop today hoping to come to a decision on which set of irons to choose. I think I'm there, I loved the feel and performance of the Callaway X-20 Tour with Project X Flighted Rifle shaft. Unfortunately they only had one flex for me to hit, the 5.0.
I believe this is the shaft for me, my swing speed ranges anywhere from 75-85, averaging 80 obviously. The guy trying to sell me the set didn't seem too sure and only confused me with shaft stiffness selection.
I was told that the 5.0 was a shaft considered to be between regular and stiff. Anyone have any feedback on where my swing falls with these shafts. I read that the 5.0 in reality is a step between a standard and stiff flex. Hoping someone can help me confirm.
I had some irons reshafted a long time ago (before my new set). I have a similar swing speed as you and the custom fitter said that I didn't need Project X, or the Flighted shafts (even tho he'd make more money). He sold me on the Rifles. He said 5.0 would be a bit stiff. Since I am a +1 he fitted me for the 4.5's which came out to 4.78. He also stepped the shafts. The 5-iron shaft went into the 6-iron, the 6-iron into a 7-iron, etc. He spent a good hour fitting me for the shafts...and didn't charge me for the fitting. By the way, the RP Flighted shafts aren't the same as Project X.
The 5.0 is probably closer to stiff. When I was thinking about Rifles originally I contacted Royal Precision (TechnicalSupport@RoyalPrecision.com), and the person who replied suggested a 4.5. in a Rifle shaft. He basically echoed everything the fitter said. You may want to contact Royal Precision first.
The Rifles are a terrific shaft and a lot less expensive than the Project X. When I recently purchased my new Big Bertha's I asked my fitter about the stock steel shaft (Royal Precision Microtaper Uniflex), and he said it was a great shaft, and I might even like it better than the Royal Precision Rifles (now my son's irons). I also called Callaway customer service and the gentleman I spoke also suggested I stick with the OEM steel shaft. I don't know if the stock steel shaft with the X-20s is a Royal Precision or not. You can call Callaway customer service at: 800-588-9836.
I stand corrected with regard to Project X Tour Flighted (thanks for correcting me).
It is a beautiful shaft, but IMHO I would just caution you to make sure it is the correct shaft for you. If it is, great! Callaway has great customer service and could probably answer any questions/concerns you may have.
I have a set of Project X Flighted shafts in a new set of irons, and they are one of the nicest sets of shaft you can get. As for flex, a R flex is a 4.5, The 5.0 is a R+. 5.5 is S, 6.0 is S+. Swing speed is not the way to pick a flex, What matters is how you load the shaft. If you liked the feel and proformance of the X-20 with 5.0 shafts. then maybe that's the one you should get. If you can find a set with $.5 shaft, then by all means try them. It wouldn't surprise me if you liked the 4.5 flex better. For what it's worth, and it's not much, I have 5.0 in my new irons, and I hit the 9 iron 150 carry, and my swing speed with a driver is 110.

My red bold. OnePutt is absolutely correct. That's why fitting is so important. The right shaft is critical.
My average iron speed: 80mph
My average driver speed: 100-105mpg
I went with the 5.0, felt best and the clubs only come in 5.0 and 6.0 so I'm very happy with my decision.
I picked up a driver as well, the Callaway X460cc in regular shaft. I was crushing the ball with the regular compared to the stiff. I liked the weight on the tour driver but it's only available in stiff. The guy at the local store was watching my swing and told me it was very smooth and that even though my driver swing is above 100, I was hitting the ball considerable better with the regular shaft.
