Re: To replace or not to replace
Tim, it really depends on the design of the irons. Are they cavity backed is the really big design factor. 25-30 years may be too far back. If the clubs aren't cavity backed, you are giving up forgiveness that today's clubs have. If the clubs are cavity backed, a new set probably isn't a necessity. Sure, today cavities are bigger, but the increase in forgiveness in irons is pretty small, unless you start looking at those all hybrid sets that Cleveland and Tour Edge and now Cobra has out.
Irons have not been significantly improved since the cavity backs have been made commonplace. Now, drivers and woods on the other hand, have been significantly improved. I see from your original post that you did get a new 3 wood. That is good, because if you were using a 25-30 year old 3 wood, you would definitely be giving up yards and forgiveness. Same thing goes for an old driver. Now, for the woods and driver, you don't have to go with 2007 models, anything in the last 3, 4, or 5 years is pretty good.
So, in conclusion, if your irons are cavity backed, they are good to start with. If they aren't it is probably worth finding a good used set that is.
