To replace or not to replace

I just got back into the game of golf this year. I started out using my late dad's equipment. Then I started upgrading by purchacing 3 new woods, a new putter, a hybrid, a new ball retriever, a new pull cart, and a new golf bag. I still use 6 of his old irons which are 25 - 30 years old. Should I replace them or no?

Re: To replace or not to replace

It might be time. What kind are they? I am in the same boat as my dad passed away in April and I am trying his Ping Eye 2 orange dots to see if I want to keep them. If not the time has come to upgrade my irons to play with the rest of my equipment.

As always I am hitting RockBottom to use the coupon code GOBOILERS to save an additional 10% off my purchase.

I don't know the brand off the bat. I know that the brand doesn't exist. I have two sets of irons on my watching list on ebay. Will try to place a bid in a few days.

Re: To replace or not to replace

Tim, it really depends on the design of the irons. Are they cavity backed is the really big design factor. 25-30 years may be too far back. If the clubs aren't cavity backed, you are giving up forgiveness that today's clubs have. If the clubs are cavity backed, a new set probably isn't a necessity. Sure, today cavities are bigger, but the increase in forgiveness in irons is pretty small, unless you start looking at those all hybrid sets that Cleveland and Tour Edge and now Cobra has out.

Irons have not been significantly improved since the cavity backs have been made commonplace. Now, drivers and woods on the other hand, have been significantly improved. I see from your original post that you did get a new 3 wood. That is good, because if you were using a 25-30 year old 3 wood, you would definitely be giving up yards and forgiveness. Same thing goes for an old driver. Now, for the woods and driver, you don't have to go with 2007 models, anything in the last 3, 4, or 5 years is pretty good.

So, in conclusion, if your irons are cavity backed, they are good to start with. If they aren't it is probably worth finding a good used set that is.

Definitely replace them. I went from some 20 year old clubs to some new ones this year. What a difference! The older ones I had were much more expensive than the new ones too, but these are longer and much more forgiving.

Re: To replace or not to replace

Last week, I ordered a new set of irons from ebay. Fedex delivered them Wednesday. I took them to the driving range. Big difference.
