Getting new driver in the next two weeks

Well I decided I am gonna buy the Nike SUMO2 (square one). I like the looks and the way it feels. They will let me try it for free for 30 days so I am gonna do that to make sure. but I am also looking at the Ping G10 and the Callaway FT-5. anyone have a difference of opinion on these. I am going to get fitted for the club on friday.

Re: Getting new driver in the next two weeks

The two people I know with a Nike SQ2 say they hit it straighter but shorter than their last driver. Both are 5 to 8 HDCP players and pretty credible sources. I haven't done any extensive testing on it. It has a distinct and loud crack at impact. I can tell where the guy hitting the SQ2 is on the course... by the noise I can actually tell what tee he's on. The stock Mitsubishi/Rayon shaft is very soft and torquey. The optional UST ProForce V2 65 or Aldila VS Proto 65 suit a stronger hitter better than the fly rod stock shaft.

The G10 looks really similar to the G5. I don't think you'll get any worthwhile feedback on the G10 for a few weeks. Stock shafts are a new Ping TFC, Grafalloy Pro Launch Red, and UST ProForce V2 65 High Launch.

The FT-5 is a nice looking, feeling, and sounding club. The lie angle is strangely 56 degrees when drivers are normally 58 or 59. For me, the 3 degree difference is noticable and weird. Other than that, I like the club. I hit it pretty well. The tour model is very workable. The stock shafts are a little soft, the Fujikura Fit-On E150 and E360 are in the 3.5 to 3.9 degrees of torque range and mid bend with mid to soft tips. Lot's of options are available, too.

I couldn't handle the sound of the square Nike driver; I also hit it shorter than a Ping G5, but it was very forgiving so I hit a lot of fairways the day I demo'd it. (Cool avatar btw, are you an MD?)

nurse currently md school in a few years.

So any other drivers you would recommend? I am a mid handicapper (16) but I usually have two bad holes a scorecard that put like 4+per hole. I swing very hard. All my irons I swing at 75% and driver I try to crush obviously. I dont really want to spend over $300 for one. golf galaxy has a try it at your own course that I am going to take advantage of. they also have lots of used drivers including the SUMO2, Cleveland HiBore, and Ping's.

Re: Getting new driver in the next two weeks

Focus on the right shaft with whatever driver you choose. The right shaft will help you hit more fairways and get the most length from your swing.

GolfTest USA is a web site that has updated rankings of various categories of drivers. You may find a better club than the SUMO2. There is no such thing as the best club, but there are clubs and shafts that maximize your swing. See an independent clubfitter.

the last few months I've been trying a lot of drivers. I'd stay away from the regular HiBore, but I've heard a lot of positive comments about the HiBore XL. I'm also a mid handicapper and swing pretty hard. I liked the Callaway x460 tour with pro launch shaft. The regular x460 was just okay. The Ping G5 was a nice club. I finally settled on the Burner TP with an upgraded shaft.
Like Andy said, the right shaft is key. Do you use a stiff or x-stiff? There are a lot of variables with the shafts-- I'm sure I don't appreciate most of them Sounds like a good idea to take advantage of being able to try a driver for a couple rounds and exchange it-- wish I had a store like that around...probably would have saved me a lot of time

Re: Getting new driver in the next two weeks

Well a couple weeks turned into today. I got me a new Nike Sumo 2 8.5degree with a Stiff shaft. I tried the Cleveland HiBore didn't hit it as consistant as the nike. I also tried the G5 and it just didn't work for me. The Sumo with a Regular flex shaft still had alot more slice than I wanted. The one I got has just a slight fade to it, Plus I am carrying the ball about 250 and total yardage about 275. This is gonna be much better off the tee than my 4hybrid. I am going to the course tomorrow I will update results. Oh and it is LOUD my wife said it sounds like I am hitting a fence post with it.

Let's hope that it doesn't come to that!

Good luck tomorrow!

They tested my swing and that is what it said I needed 8.5-9
I have hit it at the range and it carries 260 which I am super pleased with. I have always hit the ball super high now the 8.5 straightens it out. DIG IT
