Swingweight????

I just had my driver shortened by an inch. My pro told me that it was now a C7 swingweight. What pros or cons is there to this, what difference does it make? Would I benefit from adding some lead tape to the head of the club? If so, how much tape would it take to bring it back up to the original D2 swingweight? (club is a Callaway FT-5)

Re: Swingweight????

I am surprised that the person who cut the inch off for you didn't ask if you wanted swingweighted back.

It is going to feel different. Maybe not a lot different, but probably some different. Not only with the weight feel be different, but the shaft is probably going to be a little stiffer, too. If the feel is bothering you, whether from the lighter weight/swingwieght, or from the shaft, the lead tape can help in both areas. It will put the weight back, and the extra weight on the head will make the shaft lightly less stiff.

All that said, 6 points isn't really a huge difference. That's about the limit the average amateur can tell the difference of. That is, if you were given two identical clubs, one 6 swingweight points heavier than the other, a lot of amateur golfers may not be able to tell the difference just from swinging the two clubs, so you may not notice a significant difference at all.

Ultimately, lead tape is pretty cheap, so you might as well experiment with it to see what feels best to you. Your driver may even have weight plugs that a clubmaker can change if you don't like the look of the lead tape.

Re: Swingweight????

I thnk D2 to C7 is a hugh difference, and one most good golfers would notice. And a C7 weight is going to make the head feel very light, and make it difficult to feel the head of the club at the end of the shaft. I assume the shaft was just cut an inch off the butt, so the flex will not be effected much, a little but not much. Try the driver as is, and if you can't feel the head at all, have it put back to D2.

Re: Swingweight????

I agree. For the most part, I can't tell the difference of anything in the D1 to D4 or D5 range in woods, but anything below D1 is noticably lighter than I am accustomed to. The difference in feel will most likely alter your ability to manipulate the clubhead with your grip.

I think it's a control thing is what I'm trying to say. I use the way the club feels to tell me where the club is through the swing. If there's not enough weight there, the feedback seems absent.
