Found a ball I actually like better than the PRO-V1
I have a friend that buys almost every ball out there, and for the most part I still use my Pro-v1's I just like the way they feel off of the putter and the way I can put spin on them. I really haven't found anything else that feels the same for me. that is until I started to use these
Callaway HX-tours
I don't know what it is, but I think these feel softer for me and compress more, maybe its in my head but I usually do a scramble when I play, meaning I play about 3 balls each shot and play the worst shot out of the 3, ( the course I play at is usually dead )
I noticed that I when I used 2 pro-v1's and 1 HX tour, my tour ball went further and had more spin on it. I have since been using these balls only.
Re: Found a ball I actually like better than the PRO-V1
Yeah, I like them also. I too get better distance and spin from them. I think it has to do with my swing speed. ProV1s are best for golfer with a highter swing speed - like over 100. My swing speed is only around 93 and the Callaway HX Tours are geared more to that swing speed.(BTW, The regular Callaway Black is geared more for the 100+ swing speed). But, I found a ball I like even better........The Taylor Made Black.
Re: Found a ball I actually like better than the PRO-V1
Watch for these to go on sale soon fastfed. Callaways's newest balls, the i and ix should be released to the public soon. Then all these HX Tours and HX Tour 56s will be last year's models and will in all likelihood be discounted.
dieter, I think you confused yourself at least a little there. Because, there was no official "Callaway Black" ball. Those were the HX Tours, they came in a black box so as to differentiate it from the HX Red and HX Blue balls.
The HX Tour and the ProV1x were very similar in that both were a little higher compression and a little less spin than the HX Tour 56 and ProV1. In general, if you played a ProV1x you played the HX Tour and if you liked the slightly softer more spin from a ProV1 you played a HX Tour 56.
Finally, I think that Golf Magazine's recent golf ball test article showed that the myth of needing 100+ mph swing speed to play a premium ball is all bunk. Sure, you may not be compressing the core fully to get the most out of the ball, but the testing showed that you're only leaving at most 5 to 10 yards off your drives, and sometimes nothing! It is not like you are losing 30 or 40 yards out there. If you really like the much better greenside spin and feel of a premium ball, it is probably worth sacrificing a few yards on your drives for the better greenside confidence and control.
Like everything in golf, you have to find what works best for your own swing. There aren't many hard and fast rules. Personal testing is just about the only way to go. There is that website golfballselector.com, but you have to pay a lot of money for it (anything more than $1 for that service is a lot of money in my mind), and frankly, the testing is fun to me. Because I test them on the course and that means I'm out playing golf -- of course that's fun!

Re: Found a ball I actually like better than the PRO-V1
I have said it before and i will say it again try the Srixon z-urs or the z-urc,thes performas well if not better than pro v1's,a very underrated golf ball.
Re: Found a ball I actually like better than the PRO-V1
I fully agree. The Srixon Z-URS fits my 85-90 mph swing beautifully for distance and spin. And the cover is more abrasion resistent that that of the Pro V1.
Re: Found a ball I actually like better than the PRO-V1
It's a feel thing. I use Srixons alot, and love them. Other people don't.
I can spin the $7/dozen Ram golf balls from Big Lots though, and those things are rocks. I used to love the Nike One Platinum, but it spins too much for me unless the greens are rock hard. There's just no substitute for trying different balls, and deciding for yourself which one you like best.

What really is the softest ?
Ask another person what they think that softest is and they might say Callaway's HX Tour 56. Ask a third and they might say Srixon's Soft Feel. Ask a fourth and they might say Wilson's 50/50. Etc. etc.
I think that the biggest thing there is that there really isn't that large of a difference between the softest and the hardest ball. Also, the test is imperfect because it just measures the static Shore D hardness of the cover. It doesn't measure how it feels or deforms or anything about what happens when it is hit.
But, the main point is that what one person says is the softest, another may disagree. That's why it is worth buying a sleeve of each and figuring it out for yourself.

I really don't know what makes the difference between balls to be honest. I know what I can hit further and what will spin more..
But its funny you mentioned the wilson 50/50, I actually was at walmart today and as weird as this is, I kinda bite down on the balls, ( I know :) ) and the wilson 50/50 was so **** soft, I was in shock.. The dimples looked weird but I wonder if these would be as good as the pro-v1's I mean they are softer from my bite test thats for sure. LOL
Re: Found a ball I actually like better than the PRO-V1
I've hit the 50/50's. They're good golf balls for the money.
I think that's where the real golf ball innovation has been for the last few years - in the low-mid price range balls. They just keep getting better, while the high-end balls seem to have stalled. Most people that think they need the high-end golf balls based on experiences from 5 years or so ago, would now be perfectly happy using a modern mid-line ball.
That's my $.02 on the subject, and I've tried just about every new ball that's come out in the last 5 years.
Re: Found a ball I actually like better than the PRO-V1
I agree lowof83. The mid-priced balls have really improved recently. Bridgestone's e5+ and e6+, Srixon's Trispeed and Ad333, Top Flight's D2 and soon to be released Gamer, Pinnacle's Exception, Wilson's Tx4, 50/50 and new Zip balls, the Maxfli's Noodles and Fires, now called TaylorMade Burner -- all good balls right around the $25/doz mark.
I think it is only going to get better. TopFlight's Gamer is the first three piece ball to MSRP under $20. The gradient core technology like that used in Srixon's AD333 makes it perform very similarly to a three piece ball. Someone really needs to just figure out how to make urethane cheaper or how to make a cover that picks up spins like urethane, and the mid-price balls will be every bit as good as the more expensive ones.
The more expensive ones are moving to more and more layers -- Callaway's new i balls have 4 layers. The manufacturers will always find a way to make their premium balls look like they have a lot of extra features/performance, but you no longer are relegated to distance rocks if you don't want to shell out the money for the premium balls.
