prior years clubs

What do places like golf galaxy, dicks etc in addition to smaller golf shops do with unsold iron sets from prior years that are unsold? I know you can look around the internet and find some good deals but it seems like when i look in an actual store they pretty much only have full priced stuff.
I'm not looking to buy anything right now (just browsing until i'm ready to upgrade down the road from astarter set.)

Re: prior years clubs

Most major club manufacturers dictate the price their clubs are to be sold to retailers. Ping, Mizuno, Callaway, Titleist, and Nike all do this. That's why every website or store you go to all have the same price. Once a company knows they are going to be replacing a product, they start allowing retailers to discount them. Most retailers are able to sell off their stock at these discounted prices. Some companies will take back overstocks, if the retailer is buying enough of their new product line. Most of these overstocks end up on discount sites like RockBottomGolf.com.

Re: prior years clubs

Just yesterday I bought a set of Cleveland CG4 3-PW Steel Stiff Shaft for 299.99 at Dick's. Couldn't really pass up the deal, plus I got another $15 off with my Dick;s scorecard. Traded in my Cally X-14's towards the price and walked out the door for $170 with CG4's in hand. Just keep your eyes open and some will go on clearance before they ship them back to the manufacturer.

I see what you mean about Dick's. They had a couple nice markdown sets when i was there today picking of something for my kids. I really liked an adams idea2 hybrid set they had but i'm going to wait until i get somewhat comfortable with my swing before i upgrade.
I do know one thing though-when i'm ready theres no way i'm paying full price for anything!

Big stores, like Dick's and Sports Authority, drastically cut the prices. The smaller shop like a Golf USA down the street still has the 'promotional' poster for the Mactec NVG2.

I got my Mizuno MX-900s graphite (which I was salivating for when they first came out at $1300) at Edwin Watts for $500+ when the 950s came out. The salesman at the store didn't even know that the price dropped (at least he acted that way when it rang up $850).
