When is it time for new Irons?

Hi all,
This is my first time posting here.
I have been golfing for over a year now and love it. I have Cobra woods but I have a cheap set of Golden Bear Irons. I'm wondering if it would improve my game to get new irons, like some of the "game improvement" ones. Or are my current irons good enough for now? I currently shoot in the high 90's and would like to get new ones but am wondering if I should wait until I'm better.

I think it depends on where you feel you need improvement on your game. It has been my personal observation that if the clubs fit your swing that changing clubs won't be a drastic improvement. The Golden Bears are a game improvement club anyway so if it was me I would wait til you at least get to where you are shooting in the 80's consistently then look to blow money if you still wish to. I've had two sets of cheap GI clubs and one nice set of Big Berthas and now use forged cavity back blades and all distances and shot dispersion seemed so close the money didn't buy an improvement but swing changes did. What I might suggest is spending a little money on a good set of wedges and get them down pat because that and putting is the best way to improve scoring. Again most of it is confidence in what you are using so if you feel something else might work better then get fitted so you eliminate the afterthought.

That's not what came to my mind first, but there's not a statement more true. 75 yards and in is generally the area where golfers can make the most dramatic improvement in their games. I think for your scoring average, you can probably drop your handicap by 10 strokes or so by focusing on improving that area of your game.

If you're hades-bent on getting new irons, or if your current set doesn't fit you in terms of shaft flex, bend point, or lie angle... then by all means look into replacements. If you don't want to spend a ton of cash, check out Solid Rock Golf | Building Your Game On A Solid Foundation where you can get a custom fit set of irons (original designs, not knock-offs) for less than $300. I have had good experiences with that site, and they offer a 10% discount to members of this forum. Shipping is quick and reasonable as well.

It depends upon what clubs really give you trouble. If it's the long irons, then replacing them with hybrids will take care of it.

If it's a low end set or the set is really old, your wedges may be the culprit.

If the shafts of your current irons do not match your swing speed, then get a new set.

Re: When is it time for new Irons?

Golden Bear golf clubs are for the beginners that were not certain if they'll stick with the game, Good and inexpensive golf club for the first year os so, but if you're interested in getting better, you could get another set of irons now.
Check with some of the OEM GI irons from previous year model or even models from serveral
years back, them could be had for 30%-50% of the original asking price. A nice used set is also a good choice.
Best is to get the correct shaft for your swing.

When your short game is as good as it can get.
