Help in deciding clubs.

Hi all,

I am new to golf and looking to get a good set of clubs to start out with. I have looked around and have narrowed my choices down to two and I was hoping to get some feedback on which one is better to go with.

The two brands I am looking at are

Tiger Shark, Hammerhead
Tiger Shark Hammerhead Hi-Launch Mens Package Set at Golf Headquarters - Your Game is Our Business

Maxfli:
Maxfli Black Max Men's Complete Set at Golf Galaxy

Re: Help in deciding clubs.

I was in the same situation as you in December and made the mistake of buying a starter set like you are looking at(not exactly the same). It was before i found this forum.
While i'm too new to suggest anything in particular i would look at buying from globalgolf where you can get decent used clubs from name brand companies fairly inexpensive, contact solid rock golf(sponsor here) or possibly rockbottom golf.

Re: Help in deciding clubs.

Club selection is a matter of choice for the individual. You have to feel confident with what you're using. Not sure what your swing speed is or if you've had it checked but generally these sets are for the average golfer and the driver is probably a cheaper high torque shaft which won't hold up generally to an aggressive swing. If your swing speed is between 80-95 you probably could be ok with the driver. Most all the other clubs should be fine as long as you don't have to adjust lies or loft. Strarting out clubs I think you'd be ok if you fit that swing speed range. If you require adjustments for fitting I'd ask the store if they can be adjusted. Not a golf pro but that's how I see it.

Re: Help in deciding clubs.

There is nothing wrong with the starter set if you're budget minded. you wil not buy a nice used set of iron with the money for a complete set of starter set.
A good used set of irons will run about $300 + woods + bag + putter.
However, if you're not totally new to the game and will enjoy it for a longer period than just one summer; then I'd look closely to get a nice used set or have one set made for you from components.

Between the two, Maxfli has a 460 cc driver. Maxfli is a good set. Look at Orlimar, also from Sports Authority.

As a starter set, these are better than the walmart versions I have seen.

While you are learning, these should be fine. Creating your own set takes time/experimentation/trial and error unless you want to get completely fitted from putter to driver by a clubfitter.

Re: Help in deciding clubs.

I ended up going with a starter set for around 300 from top flight from the golf store local here. They were very helpful and they offer sizing of the clubs for free. Right after I bought them I tried them out on a bucket of balls and was very happy thus far.

Thank you all for the help!
