I tried some clubs at the store today and would like some advice
Last week I started looking for some new clubs to get and got a few opinions and today I went to a couple golf stores and talked to the salesmen and hit some clubs. I tried different types (from regular cavity backs to some that were more of a hybrid design), both graphite and steel, and he even let me hit a couple of womens clubs to see the different in shaft length since I am short, but the standard length felt fine.
Anyways, I hit 6 and 7 irons of different brands including Taylor Made Draw, Cleveland Launcher, Adams A3OS, Adams Tech OS, and a couple from a package set. Of course they all felt good when I hit the ball dead on, but I really liked the deep backs of both Adams sets because even when I didn't hit under the ball, it still got up in the air. The ones they had there were graphite, and to be honest I didn't really notice if I liked graphite better or not. I just noticed they were lighter. Are there any disadvantages to graphite shafts? The guy told me that you just dont notice feedback from them but is that something I need to worry about?
So I liked both Adams, but the OS3 is out of my price range and $600. The Tech OS were on sale at that shop for $500, but that still is a little more than I would like to spend. I am wondering if the A2 would be comparable (which they did not have) but have seen it online for around $269 and also an ad at a local store for $299 graphite shafts (if they have any left). I notice on those its says the 5-7 are hollow back as opposed to cavity back. What is the difference? The ones in the Tech OS I was hitting seemed more like a hybrid and I could hit it well, but is that big of a difference?

I can only tell you that the couple of folks I know that have A2 clubs are very pleased with them and I don't think you can go wrong. Though I'm not sure about the graphite verses steel choice, that would depend on your club head speed and physical strength, etc.
Re: I tried some clubs at the store today and would like some advice
Are steel shafts better for faster swing speed/more strength? I am still learning so therefore normally don't swing real hard (except when I forget what I was taught in lessons and try to kill the ball!) so I don't know if that helps to make a decision or not. And I am short and not super strong or anything either.
Re: I tried some clubs at the store today and would like some advice
All the Adams clubs I used were graphites. So I dont know how they would have been in steel. Of the other types of clubs I hit, I just noticed the graphite was lighter, but don't know if I liked one better than the other.
Re: I tried some clubs at the store today and would like some advice
I hit the Adams Idea A3 set (3 boxer hybrids and 5 regular irons) the other day and was super-impressed by a set that costs $500. I think the Idea A3 OS (3 boxer hybrids, 2 hollow iron/hybrids, and 3 irons) set is $600.
The A3 sets are much more game-improvement than the A2 sets in terms of MOI in the hybrids and iron/hybrids. I give the two new sets a big thumbs up.

Alf is correct. Depending upon the golf store you go to a pro might be on staff. Another thing you can do is ask if you can demo the clubs outside the store and see how they work for you on the course or range.
Graphite will give feedback (I have graphite as my shafts), but they are lighter, and depending upon the shaft, shot dispersion may not be as tight as it is with steel. Graphite also serves as an excellent vibration dampener, which if you suffer from any joint problems will be helpful.
Re: I tried some clubs at the store today and would like some advice
Yeah thats what the guy was telling me that seniors use the graphite shafts because its easier on them. I am 30 so i shouldnt need to worry about that yet. I found the steel set for $260 total with shipping online and a local store has all graphites that will come to $325 after tax. You think its probably better to spend that extra $65 on something else (wedges, a wood, or something)?
Re: I tried some clubs at the store today and would like some advice
You could get the A2 set from rockbottomgolf.com and pick up a set of Tom Watson Wedges for less than $325, if you use the coupon code GOBOILERS for 10% off.
I picked up the A2s about a month ago and I love them.
Re: I tried some clubs at the store today and would like some advice
How are those wedges? That might be a good idea since I don't have any wedges or never have used them. I can chip ok when I am close to the green, but when I am like 30-50 yards out I never am really sure what to do. At least I have a putter and a driver and 3 wood, so even though the woods probably arent very good, I am still more interested in getting good with the irons so should probably wait to get new woods anyways.
Re: I tried some clubs at the store today and would like some advice
I haven't been playing the game long (less than a year) and they are my first set of wedges, so I haven't got a real basis of comparison to other wedges out there, but they suit me fine. There are a few people on this site that play them and most seem to like them pretty well. Check out the other thread about value wedges for some of what others think about them.

So you basicly go to the Brick and Mortar shop get fitted up demo some clubs and then go spend your money on line. Good luck getting fit properly with the online company and dont expect any breaks from the local shop owner when you need the lie angle adjusted or the shafts cut down. wiser to spend you money at a local shop so you can take advantage of the fitting experts and follow up service. Just my 2 cents
Re: I tried some clubs at the store today and would like some advice
The guy at the store never said anything about getting fitted. If it was within $50 I might buy them there, but the half hour I spent hitting clubs isn't worth the extra $400 to buy them there! Its not like I went to a pro shop and got evaluated and got a free fitting or anything.
