I have been golfing for all of 2 months. I am rather big guy (6'1, 275 lb) and an avid weightlifter. I bought a set of Slazenger Raw Distance from Dick's as my starter set and believed the guy there that the driver, 3w, 5w and 3-hybrid & 4-hybrid (all graphite Regular stiff shafts) would not be too "whippy" for me considering how strong I am. The irons work great and I am hitting them pretty good.
However, I cannot hit the clubs mentioned above. I now use my brothers old Titleist X-stiff driver (which i hit pretty good) and a TM 5w (S-Flex) that I bought at Golf Galaxy. I want to know if it would be worth me getting my hyrids reshafted with steel shafts or just try to find a used 3 and 4 hybrid with S-Flex shafts. I really don't have a clue what to do. I have tried at the range countless times to hit my Slazenger 3w, 3h, and 4h with no luck. Any suggestions?
Golf isn't a game of strength per se...it takes awhile to develop a golf swing that would generate the controlled headspeed that would require a stiffer shaft than what you have...two months playing isn't enough time to have developed a swing, and I guaruantee that what you are working with now is adequate for developing such...if the shafts feel too whippy, it isn't because you are big and strong as much as it is that I would put money on that you are swinging too hard in the wrong parts of the swing...
I would suggest some lessons, time around the chipping and pitching area, and a concentration on getting the small swing down (>100yds)...it isn't as exciting as the driver and woods, and it won't get you around the course, but it needs to be done and in doing so you learn the importance of the short game in golf, and the proper sequencing of the swing as pitching is just a smaller, more controlled version of the full swing...I would say that at 275 and musclebound unless you have a big part of your workout routine dedicated to stretching, you will have difficulty generating the headspeed that would require a stiiffer shaft, IF YOU ARE SWINGING CORRECTLY...equipment isn't going to solve this one, and rarely does as all swing issues usually lie in the person holding the club rather than the club itself...
Why hit it good when you can hit great? You hit the stiffs good because it doest transfer all of the muscle to the club. With a regular flex it bends with all the torque u put into the swing. so swing soft and get the swing down...
BTW, one of the hardest swingers I know is a teenager who weighs 150lbs soaking wet...golf just isn't about power and while you may need to stiffen the flex in your shafts later on, swinging within the parameters of what you have and learning to hit it straight will go a long way towards a lasting solid foundation...
Just curious...what is your current driving and 5w carry distance and more importantly the dispersion (average distance from your aim point left or right)...
I don't want to come off the wrong way here...I just think that two months in is way too early to start to consider modifications on the equipment used for your long game as those modifications ideally will improve consistency based on your swing tendencies, and there isn't a chance that after only two months there are any real consistent tendencies to base a decision on...
at the driving range, i am constantly hitting my driver 250-275 and my 5w around 225-240. as far as dispersion, I couldn't tell you...not something I have been keeping track of.
