I'm currently carrying a Callaway driver and Callaway 3 wood... i'm looking at new drivers and i'd like to keep the same brand 3 wood as the driver i purchase. not sure that's going to happen b/c i love my 3w though(looking at Taylor Made, Cleveland and some others).
how many of you guys actually hit the same brand combo? if you do or don't, why?
I know this doesn't matter much.... but, i'd like to know.
I got with what i like.. I use a cleavand driver, TM 3 wood, 4-9 Cobra, 2iron Tommy Armour, Titleist DCI P, L and S Adams and Odysey putter.. I am not brand loyal i play withwhat i feel good hitting.
I don't care if the brands match up. I use a PING G2 driver but my 3 and 5 woods are Nike Ignite clubs. For whatever reason, I did not like the Ping 3 and 5 woods and the Nike clubs are automatic for me. Go with what works and don't worry what matches. Good luck.
It used to matter to me what brand model of 3 wood I was using was matched with the driver. Up to thepoint I got my Yonexdriver as I tried the two at the time options for their 3 woods. I've since changed my driver a few times, but kept the 3 wood & 5 wood combo as those fairway woodds just feel right... Well the Yonex driver felt just right too, I had my reasons for needing to try a change.
However now I've found the fairway woods I really like I doubt I'll mess with those for a bit (they've got just enough cowbell..lol)
I use a Nike IC3 driver and Ram fairway metals (3, 5, 7 & 9). For the past 8 years I split my long clubs finding the ones I hit best are not matched from driver to the rest. Curiously, the last driver-3wood of the same line I used were Knights from Sam's Club. Very cheap, but they helped me qualify for 3 US Senior Amateur competitions. The current setup has had even better results, though.
i love taylormade drivers, but i just couldn't hit their 3w and 5w. but i found a 3w5w combo in the bargain bucket one day and i hit the **** out of them. they are cobra hs9. i love those two clubs. its hard to get brands out of the picture, but i'd rather play good than just have a matching set of clubs i can't hit.
well, i'm definitely going with the Hi bore XLS driver... i'm going to try the 3w, but like i said, it will have to be one solid 3w for me to change.
I usually go with feel when buying clubs(setup also plays a big role in my choices)... my reasoning for staying with the same manufacturer is that i think it would be easier to learn the 3w or Driver if i was hitting one or the other good. i know it's completely mental...
i have found the head doens't make a whole lot of differene, but i've nto been playing enough lately to stay consistant.... The head has to be apealing to YOU both in side, address, and sound.
It's the shaft that makes ALL the difference. My personal preference in drivers are Ping. I've hit Callaway, Cobra, and Taylor Made but find myself in more of a groove with my Ping. However, I did go through a 'fitting' of sorts at my local Golf galaxy. They have a WONDERFUL video-game like hitting station that measures ball flight, etc. From there you can get a good feel for what the club will do "in the real world". Just find a few clubs with the shafts you want to try and bomb away. Most retailers have custom club ordering so you can have (almost) whatever shaft you want dropped on the head.
I would go with what works best with you. I was recenty looking for a 5 wood and I was thinking that I would love to have a taylormade or nike. I hit a whole bunch of clubs but ended up with a an old cleveland launcher. Recenly played 18 and it was the star club in the bag! Best advise is go to a store that has a lanch monitor, that way you can see what the ball is doing.
