I need new grips…
I need to regrip…I’m about 9 months in on my current grips which have held up surprisingly well considering that I play and practice more than a little bit…I love new grips…means that I can hold the club more lightly and my distances increase, but what I don’t like is the down time that usually lasts about three days from when I drop them off to pickup…I’m just whining here…I have a second set that the grips are fairly new that I can play while the others are in the shop, but they are the backup set for a reason…
Anyway, the point of the thread is to get everyone’s grip of choice out on the table…interesting to see some of the whys in well examined grip selections as well as those who just play whatever the clubs came with…
Currently, I have Golf Pride full cord with two underwrap and rib on my backups, and Golf Pride Tour Velvet two underwrap with rib on my first set…Driver has the tour velvet with the alignment markings on it (some kind of special name but that’ll do), and everything else is like the first set save for my out of rotation clubs and the two wedges that I played today, both of which need to be fitted like the first set as one is a GP Player’s softie with three underwraps (the so called “correct” size for my hand…too big IMO and that’s what counts) and no rib, and the other wedge has the proprietary grip that came with the club which is a tour velvet with no wrap and a rib…club is still relatively new and I wanted to play it immediately after purchase and never got around to fitting it since it has been pretty good thus far…
I like both the grips that I have, lean towards the tour velvet though…I also liked the GP multicompound grip, the DD2, and the Iomic grips which I’ve either tested a single grip or tried on another set…the Iomic is cost prohibitive though…at 16bucks a grip I feel like they should throw in a car wash or a tshirt…
My putters I use a Winn Grip on the Yes (similar to what came with the club…can’t remember the code…AGV?), the original on the new Betttinardi (really nice actually…a little larger with defined edges and still in “new” condition…prior owner didn’t play it too much it would seem)…I have a couple of putters gripped with Golf Pride standard putter grips…like those too and might regrip the Yes in that next time…
I have tried 6 differnt grips and always go back to pro velvets.. Curioos why you don't do your own grips or find a new place? especically if you can't find a place with a closer turn around time. 3 days is a long time for a 20 minute job.
I've got to tell you BnR, Velvets have to be the gold standard. On my primary, I use one additional wrap at the top and three below...perfect for me. On my overseas set I use Winn Xi7's which have surprised me with their durability and tackiness when wet...two additional wraps which is probably all she wrote with them.

It's a different world over here...you can't go into a store and just buy grips...the price of a grip includes installation...labor is cheap here and do it yourselfers among the set who are able to golf is pretty much non existient...it isn't even an option...ordering things from overseas is not an option either as most things get picked over coming through customs...you might get it, you might not...that gamble combined with shipping charges makes it not worthwhile...
There isn't anything that is service related that is quick over here...just a part of life...
Like corded on my wedges but for everything else I now use quite soft Winn Grips. Or at least so far on the irons. I really do need to change my fairway woods over to them too.
You see the problem I have is my hands get very dry in the cold conditions I have to work in & the skin gets very suseptable to getting ripped up with standard corse rubber grips.
Though the slightly odd & ironic thing is the corded grips don't seem to damage my hands as bad.
So I went to the clubfitter and found that they stopped carrying my tour velvets...they have half cord tour velvets and full cord...have to think about it...there's some shops behind my building that do club repair...going to check them out tomorrow...one good thing came out of it though...my clubfitter had a secondhand Alpha 5 wood head and another shafted with a Harrison something or other...really felt good so I'm taking an old aldila nv 75 shaft down to him to put it together...can't wait to try it out...
