I used to have a problem with my 60 degree and 56 degree wedges.
The problem was that more often than not, I would skull the shot. We all know the outcome of that.
I got to thinking that maybe the bounce was the culprit.
So, I took the 60 in, and had it bent to 58. The 56, I had bent to 54. This reduced the bounce by 2 degrees on each.
Presto, changeo!
Now I can easily slide the clubface under the ball, eliminate the skull, and put the ball much closer to the hole, without fear.
Now, of course, you need bounce for the sand traps. But the sand locally is not the fluffly white sands that the pros get to play. For the most part, our sand traps are course and gravelly. I really haven't had to play out of them recently, so I can't make a definative statement yet.
Try less bounce, it may help your game. It did mine.
I know what you went thru Bogey Burger.
I am constantly tweeking clubs, especially wedges and have many makes.
I have older vokeys that are low bounce and clevelands that have more bounce. I found that in the earlier part of the golf season I was better off with the clevelands (900s). I couldn't expect crisp contact until July (and then switch to titleist). Heck, now that time passes and I seem to play less, more bounce is better. I also have Ping eye 2s that seem to have a sort of double grind on the bottom that is the best of both worlds. I am falling into those on a more permanent basis.
12* on a 56 is not low bounce, it's "standard" for retail. I custom ground my 56*/12* to 56*/8* of bounce. Now THAT is a true low bounce 56*. Where can you buy THAT at retail?
NO Bounce is NOT how much the ball bounces off the face. It's the angle of the sole of the clubhead to the ground. The leading edge of a club sits highter off the ground than the back edge of the sole, The angle between the ground and the sole is BOUNCE. You want more bounce if you play from soft conditions, especially soft fluffy sand in the bunkers. You want less bounce if you play from firn conditions, and hard sand bunkers. Where I play, the sand in the bunkers is always very firm, so I play a SW with only 8* of bounce. Lob wedge is even less. If you want lower bounce wedges check out Golfsmith or any of the OEM's, as they all sell wedges with different degrees of bounce to suit the conditions in play.
An experienced clubtweaker can grind down your wedge bounce for around $30, maybe less in this economy. I generally charge a dollar a minute for my services and it takes about a half hour to complete.
