Hello everyone.
I am looking to buy some new clubs as a beginner golfer as of right now I have none. There seems to be a lot of choices out there and i'm not sure what I should be looking for. This is where ya'll come into play. I am looking at this set here
I would NEVER recommend anyone to buy a SET of clubs like you are looking at. NONE of them are what I would call GOOD QUALITY clubs. I would recommend instead that you buy a decent set of IRONS only for a start. You can buy either new irons or used ones from a place like Calaway Pre-owed. New you can buy from either Hireko Golf or Giga Golf and get very good irons for under $300 for the set. Less than that if you only buy 5-PW, which is what I'd recommend you start with. Sorry to spoil your day, but that 15 piece set you mention is going to be nothing by CHEAP JUNK. If you do buy it, I'd be willing to bet one or more of the clubs will break inside 60 days. And the quality will be so BAD, that it will make learning to play golf just that much harder than it already is. Bottom line is just buy some decent or good IRONS and learn how to hit the ball. THEN you can add some woods and a driver when YOU are ready. Might want to buy a low price putter to go with your irons so you can at least play some Par 3 holes and putt out.
I hearily endorse OnePutt's comments, above. Except that I would recommend Ping irons. I've been playing them for 15 years and they are super. And as I'm in my declining years, the forgiveness of perimeter weighting is most welcome.
Billyg. I just had a club fitting for the Ping !-15 irons and driver. And I can say they are both excellent clubs. Problem is the Price of new Ping irons is a bit more than what a new golfer is most likely willing to spend. especially if they don't know for sure that they are going to continue with the game. This is why I recommend a new golfer to buy used irons or less expensive sets from a place like Hireko or Giga Golf. They sell very good quality clubs for less than half the price of new OEM irons.
I am looking for a good beginner set for under 300 bucks and knowing nothing about clubs I'm lost. So if you can steer me in the right direction I wouls appreciate it. Any links to sets what to look for ext
I'd recommend the Wilson Deep Red set at Costco for $199. Sales tax is cheaper than shipping, and you want to hold the clubs to see if you are comfortable with them. Its also easier to return merchandise to a store if necessary.
It comes with a sand wedge--most sets don't. Has one fairway wood, which is all you need--most sets have two. Has a 4 hybrid, stand bad, everything you need. Don't be put off by equipment snobs. These clubs or the Top Flites will hold up just fine.
(Nothing against snobs. I'm a snob too. I'm a music snob.)
Just curious of how long have you been playing golf. I know you said you were a beginner, but have you been messing around with the game for a couple of months or longer or did you just decide to pick up the game. Reason I ask is because If you're committed than you should do as One Putt advised and try to buy a better quality set of irons, you'll thank yourself down the road. If you've decided to try the game out and want something to learn with than a set like the Top Flite complete set (owned by Callaway) might not be a bad option keeping in mind that within a year you'll probably be needing to upgrade. Still, I believe the better option is to buy a set of used or new last year model irons and forget about the woods for now since they will be more of a risk than reward. Hitting the ball in the air and advancing down the fairway is far more fun then searching for OB balls.
As for where to buy, do you have any local golf retail shops in town? That would be the first place to go as usually the staff is well informed. Yes, you might find a better deal on the internet but where do you go if and when you have any problems with your equipment? Plus, at a local store you shouldn't have to worry about the chances of purchasing fake clubs.
I agree that these clubs are pretty terrible. There is a fantastic website that sells mostly used clubs of many brands. 3balls.com | New and used golf clubs, golf equipment, golf balls, golf shoes, golf bags and golf gifts They also sell their clubs on ebay, and you can find them even cheaper that way in most cases. I just got a set of Cleveland Launcher irons #3-#5 hybrids + 6-PW for $255 on one of their ebay auctions.. Shipping was only $12 The clubs were practically brand new. That's not to say they arent the only site that sells cheap clubs...There are many others as well. In my opinion, buying brand new clubs is just a waste, beginner or not.. You can get hardly used clubs, or "previous year models" for a fraction of the cost.
Pre-owned is the best place to get a driver. I find used Burners for like 70 there, and in pretty good condition.
New irons would be pretty good. Buy some adams ones. They are around 400 but really nice.
go for a trusted brand like callaway, adams and cleveland... go for quality... anyway try to read some tips of advice regarding about the golf clubs pricing :link removed
