Beginner golfer looking for help selecting clubs

I am new to golf and have only played one season. I currently own a set of Zevo's that I bought from Golfsmith last year. I am looking for help on what I should consider when buying my next set as I am looking for clubs that will add distance but most importantly accuracy. I have recently come into some bonus money and am looking to get a new set in January. I believ I will probably go to Golfsmith to get my clubs as I believe they will custom fit sets to you. Should I buy a complete set or would I be better of piece mailing a set together? I have about $1000 to play with in getting new clubs and fitted... Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Beginner golfer looking for help selecting clubs

i think that your best bet would be to buy a set of irons 3-pw and depending how you hit your long irons (3-5) you may want to go the hybrid route. buy a decent set that u will enjoy for a couple years cause re sale isnt very good. the good thing about buying irons and woods seperate is it allows you to shop around, especially with the $1000 you have that will easily buy you a set of irons and a decent driver to start you off keep your old 3 and 5 woods until you get more money and upgrade. Myself i play with Callaway but it is completely a preference to feel. dont buy the first set u like. try them all

Hopes this helps

Re: Beginner golfer looking for help selecting clubs

Hey rpr000 .. I've tried numerous irons as I am a beginner as well however I am pretty fortunate to have a lot of coaching from friends who are between 1-8 handicappers. The irons which suites me best would be the Wilson Staff Di7 .. cause it gives really good distance and an extremely forgiving set of clubs. Di = Distance Irons. Graphite shaft which give it a good balance and does not send those vibrations up your arms. I normally stay away from hybrids at the start. But then again .. that is just my opinion.
Cheers and have a good game

If you are seriouse about buying a set of sticks of any substantial monetary amount.....go to somewhere where you can hit about 6 or 7 diffrent brands of irions.{Dicks, local pro shop, something like that} You are talking about enough money to go somewhere and get the right set and have them fitted also...........Do your homework and HIT AS MANY AS YOU CAN. Once you find the sticks that work best for you and your shot....look around at prices.

Many golf stores will have one of their pros go thru a club fitting with you if they think you may buy a set from them. This will also let you hit a number of different clubs so you can decide which ones "feel" the best. And if you don't buy clubs from them, eBay usually has a wide variety of clubs and sets offerred for sale, usually at prices substantially below what a golf store or you club pro shop would charge. Good luck your acquisition and future play.
