New to golf, I Actually swore I would never play. I have a bag of completely borrowed clubs. The irons are not a matching set. I recently went to the local Edwin Watts and they have a used set of Cleveland Vas 792 & Cleveland Launcher LP. The Vas 792 has one more club than the Launcher LP set. The launchers are $10 more. I believe the sets are 3-PW and 4-PW. The salesman told me that the 792's would be the best clubs for a beginner. I can get past ugly but my conern is if I learn to play with an offset club, how hard will it be to switch to a non offset club later? Should I just get the Launchers now and learn with those? Are the 792's really that forgiving to a NEWB? I have tried to hit both clubs but I am so bad i can't really tell a difference. Your thoughts are greatly appreciated.
first off of you are a newb you shouldn't be hitting any iron below a 5 or 6 i have been playing for 2 years and i am just now being able to hit my 4 iron i would recommend getting a hybrid for your 4 and 5 iron and as for the offset part i think that you should get the offset version because it will help you fight a nasty slice hope that helped
I have been reading about the offset a lot. it seems that it either works for you or it doesn't. it makes me wonder if people are just scared to hit with an ugly club. I am leaning toward the 792's but the Launchers are in way better shape. Either set is under $100 so I wont be out much either way.
Thanks USAFgolfer
Those VAS are terrible clubs...long been the joke of the golf world...go with the launchers, practice hitting long irons right from the get go and enjoy the learning process...I played a two iron (2-sw set) right from the start; didn't play it great but I believe it laid a foundation...one hybrid will probably cost more than either set, so get your feet wet first and have fun...
I guess I should have said this first. I currently have a set (borrowed) of Z model II irons. They were regripped at home and have had the life played out of them. I am missing the 3, 6, & the PW. But I hit the el cheapo replacements way better than I hit the Z's. I have a 3 hybrid already. It was a freebie from a wine company. Thanks for advice Bump n run
I second Bumps advice. Buy the Launcher irons by all means, They are the BETTER SET and you said they are in WAY BETTER SHAPE. That makes your choice a NO BRAINER, buy the better irons in the better condition. And for $100 or less, you can't go wrong.
Since you're only talkin' $100, take the set that's in better condition. You could even use the option my ol' lady used for me....Walmart. My gf said she didn't like me carrying my borrowed clubs in a cardboard box when I went to play my first-ever round so she ran to wally world & bought my set for right around $100. Full set of clubs (minus my $2.99 11 iron & PerfectSpin SW) including sport bag. I figure that if you can't play a decent round with the cheap clubs, why burn the high dollars for a premium set, ya know?
I'll upgrade to a better set when these either break or I get to a point where they are holding my game back.
John; My BET would be that your cheap $100 full set of clubs, IS ALREADY holding you back. None of those cheap sets are any good. Quality just isn't there, and they don't play half as well as a decent set of clubs. This is why I NEVER recommend them to anyone, not even a brand new golfer. Its much better to buy a decent set of irons at first, and then add some woods later.

I figure they're good enough to learn the basics of the swing & shot selection provided I can get good enough to have different shots to choose from.
Incidentally, during prep work for a yard sale we had this past weekend, we found a set of older Wilson Staff DynaPower irons that belonged to my girlfriend's brother-in-law. He had forgotten he even had them and gave them to me.
It's missing the 3 iron (has the 2 iron & 4-9 irons), but I threw the 2, 4 & 5 into my bag so I could try them on the course the next time out. Hitting into my practice net, they have a completely different feel but the ball comes off the 2,4 & 5 like a bullet! Now I just need to get consistent with my swing so I can really see how they play! I'm still researching those clubs to see how old they are.
I ended up with the Launcher LP's! I like the way better than the Z model II's. I have been hitting them at least 3 times a week for the last 2 weeks. I aqueezed in 4 times last week. My wife keeps asking me why i go the ATM though!

Those VAS have a US Open title on their resume', can the same be said for the Launchers!? I played the VAS for a while and despite what they look like they are a very solid club. Don't knock it 'til Ya try it!
Angel; While I understand your statement about the VAS irons having won a US Open. I don't see how that applys here. Tiger won the US OPEN and a lot more MAJORS, with a set of BLADES. and I doubt either of us would recommend blades to a beginning golfer, like the OP.
