Starting over, need advice

I played golf often high school b/c the team played for free at local courses. I have only played a handful of times in the past 4 yrs and i want to get back into it so im in the market for a new set. I was lookin at taylormade r7s or nike slingshot 4ds, any advice or opinions appreciated. By the way left handed and on a college kid budget.

With your experience and budget, a good set of used clubs makes sense. Callaway has used club sets for sale and that would give you a good idea of what costs may be involved. I've bought clubs on eBay for many years and have had consistently good results. You might find your best bargain this way. And I wish you the very best in your reengagement with this wonderful sport.

I would also check craigslist, I have seen some nice clubs cheap.

Check out Hikeko.com and look at the Acer XK irons. Excellent irons and VERT good prices.

For the record, just because you're in college and on a budget doesn't mean you need to limit yourself to entry level clubs. You just need to be thriftier. First, this is a great time to be buying a set of clubs. Retailers are trying to rid shelves of last year's models to make room for the newer sets. Second, the low market coupled with the long winter has been tough on many independent golf shops. Golf Discount Superstore (out of the midwest) is going out of business and liquidating everything.

When I shopped for mine, I too was looking for R7s. They are great clubs, but I ended up snagging a set of Mizuno MP57s for the same price and I got them custom fitted and shipped to my door for free. Shop around and I'm sure you can find a nice set that will do whatever you need them to do.

That said, I would stay away from Slingshots if your ball-striking is decent. The wide sole may be difficult when trying to work shots.
