I'm in the market for a new 3W & 5W so I spent my lunch hour testing a few different fairway woods.
I wanted to try the cleveland launcher and taylor made 580 3W & 5W. The range had tester clubs for the both launchers and the TM 3W, but not the 5W. The guy gave me the King Cobra SZ 5W to try instead.
I thought I would like the launchers, but it turned out I was hitting everything left with those (I hit a slight draw/pull naturally). The TM and Cobra were straight and long. In fact, I was surprised how much I like the Cobra.
I'll go back to try them again, but I wanted to get any suggestions from the board of other woods to try. I'd also like to hear from anyone who has tried the above mentioned clubs side by side.
Try to find some Sonartec's you can hit. This brand has come into its own. Solid!! I carry the 15° and the 19° with the Sonartec Penley shafts. After playing Callaway, Titleist, and Ping fairways... these Sonartecs are in a class by themselves.
Yes, Sonartec makes some solid fairway woods. You may want to try some of their fairway woods out. If you're seriously considering the Taylor Made 580, I would suggest to you to try the TM V-Steel instead. A lot of people like that leaps and bounds above the 580 fairway wood.
Big Bertha fairway woods are forgiving and they go very far. If that's out of your price range, go to a flea market and buy some Callaway Warbirds. They may be discontinued, but they still swing nicely.
I play the 580s (5W and 3W) and love them both. Awesome, awesome clubs. Like you, I hated the Clevelands, but did like the Vsteel. I chose the 580s b/c I prefer a bigger looking head at set up. Great, great clubs. $190 on ebay.
i will put in another vote for the sonartec. my friend just got one and i tried his a couple times and decided to get my own. fairway woods have always been my trouble spot but i seem to hit the sonartecs very well
