Well I was about a 95 shooter at the start of the season. I am now in the high 80's. I started the season with Iron off the tee's, all tees then I went to hitting my 120CC 20 year old 3 wood, got a good 240 out of that, I didnt even bother with the 120CC 20 year old driver, i wasnt consistant ATALL with it.
Last month I got my Taylormade R580XD on ebay, it was about 200 shipped to canada, and I left the stock shaft in it. The new driver IS what lowered my scores, about 10 strokes, maybe not all the driver but mostly yeah. My drives are strait down the fairway now and poking out there from 290 on avg to 310ish when i really let it rip. The driver feels REALLY light which I like a lot, put the ball anywhere on the face and it still goes like crazy, when I first got it i was hitting the ball off the heel, and i mean THE HEEL not off center and it was still flying 260. It took me week or so to figure out how to use the driver, I found out it was about .5" too long for me so I choke up on it that much. The only thing I can't do with it is play a draw, I have a natural fade but I can hit them strait as well quite easily. This club has made me enjoy my rounds WAY more, I'm by the greens in 2 on pretty much all the sub 540 yard par 5's. The sound the taylormade makes is amazing, it is huge so you never worry about whiffing it, and it looks good when your looking down on it at address.
In summation, the purchase of this driver, has made me MUCH MUCH more confident on the tee box, I ont worry about a slice anymore, I dont worry about hitting the ball off center. When you are confident on the tee box you hit your balls long and strait, when you hit them strait you automatically have a shot at birdie. If t is in the bush, well your looking at bogy or worse. I suggest this club for 300 yard hitters like myself(now that I have the club atleast), or 250 yard hitters like my dad, he has one as well.
So, if you dont want to blow the cash on an R7, this is where it is at. And they dropped in price pretty big now.
My dad is extremely happy with his purchase as well. He hasnt seen as much improvement in distance, but his consistancy is much better.all in all we are both very happy.

LiquidChill - Congratulations - yours has got to be the greatest one-season improvement I have ever heard about. Going from hitting irons off the tee at the beginning of the season, to now pounding them out an average of 290+.
You should write to TaylorMade and tell them your story. Again, congratulations, and good luck in lowering your scores even more.

What is this club like for a more experienced golfer? Im keen to try out an NV65 or YS-6 shaft and the 580XD is about the cheapest one I can find with this.....

well all I can really say to that with no experience is it works for Mike Weir.
I tried a R540XD with an aldila shaft, those sound familiar, not sure which it was... but it was a puke green kinda like. I really liked it, but the stock shaft seems just as well.
My dad shoots in the low 80's and he likes it. I havnt seen ANYONE who doesnt like the 500XD series.

LiquidChill, glad to hear you found your driver of choice. There's that saying, "drive for show, putt for dough." I've always thought, if you can hit your drives long and in the fairway, I could score much better with a short iron in my hand than a mid to long iron. Sounds like this has really helped your game. I tried the 580XD and liked it myself. A 440 cc head really gives a lot of confidence at address to just give it a go.
buns, the Aldila NV and YS-6 are two very different shafts. The NV will play stiffer than the YS-6. I currently have an NV in my driver but have tried a YS-6, too. If you're debating between these two shafts, you might want to try it out. If you have an NV or YS-6 of equal flex, the NV will play stiffer. Different people have different preferences so I couldn't really recommend a shaft to you. My suggestion is to try them yourself.
I realise the NV and YS-6 are very different unfortunately cant try pre purchse since I just dont have the selection of sellers around here and additionally Im not willing to pay $500 to buy from them (yes, prices here are quite high!). So basically im going to try and buy one on ebay, and if i get it wrong, then i can sell it on and try the other.... and still pay less than a brand new one..... plus it is more fun cos I can try it out properly and in depth on course :)
