Well after months of debating whether I should get a hybrid, I am finally willing to try them out. I am currently using a 5 wood or a 2 iron (depending on what course I play). I tried the Mizuno Fli Hi CLk in a 17* and I loved the feel of it. So my question is, what other advantages does the hybrid bring to the table? In what occasions would the hybrid be more beneficial vs. the fw wood or long iron? I hit my 5 wood and my 2 iron about 215ish and the fitting pro said I should be getting the same yardage with a hybrid. Is it easy to hit off the rough? Any comments or advise would be much appreciated. Thanks.....
I have both a 2H 19*, and a 5W 19*, but I seem to use my 5W much more - other people are different though. I've segmented my responses by the various conditions I might use the club:
Off the Teebox- Fairway woods RULE in this situation. Longer, easier to hit in my opinion, and more controllable.
- Hybrids don't seem to work well, as they require hitting DOWN on the ball, which is not good off the teebox.
- Driving Iron - I've never owned one, but I wouldn't mind replacing my 3Iron with a Nicklaus driving iron. I didn't like the 503 Titleist whatsoever.
In the Fairway- Hybrid is best choice. I like hitting down on the ball with my 2H, getting nice results.
- Fairway woods - seem to work OK, but the rounded soleplate of my 5W or 3W means I have to be VERY careful on hardpan fairways.
- Driving Irons - see above comments.
Light Rough- Fairway woods work better for me - the rounded soleplate cuts thru the grass easier, and I get better results.
- Hybrid - Yuck. Formula for disaster for me, for whatever reason.
- Driving Irons - see above comments.
In summary - I rotate a 2H and 5W (both 19*), depending on the course. For a long course requiring plenty of Drivers/3Woods off the tee, I carry the 2H. For a shorter course, I carry the 5W for using off the teebox on short par4's. Lately - I find myself carrying the 5W much more often, for all conditions.
First of all, I have the Mizuno fli hi in 17* aswell, The main reason I bought the hybrid instead of 2 iron is control and club impact. With my 2/3 irons, I have problems hitting a nice straight 200+ yard shot, I normally catch it off the toe/heel but This only occurs with my 3 iron normally, When I made the switch to a hybrid, Due to the shorter shaft I felt I had more control over the ball than I do with the iron, Aswell as hitting a nice accurate shot, Most times out of the middle! As i only just bought my hybrid in the middle of winter I havnt really had chance to hit it off the deck / out of the rough, As local rules in winter say we have to tee it up...Another thing I like about the club is I seem to be able to work it alot better than an iron, with alot more forgiveness. If youre having trouble with a longer iron id say defo get a hybrid.
If your interested I have a Titleist 503H steel shaft that I'm looking to sell. It's in great condition. It's a wonderful club, but I made the mistake of trying out a taylor made and fell in love with it.
I was using the Adams Ovation 5 wood 19* it was a great club, but I wanted a Hybrid in my bag so I ended up getting the new Cleveland Halo 2i 19* with an Aldila NV Hybrid shaft... This to me is the best Hybrid out there it felt like the Taylormade rescue and the Nike Cpr mixed into one.. I fell in love it with so I got rid of the Adams a went with the Halo. If you are looking for a Hybrid give this club a try....
When buying a hybrid, ask yourself the question if you like hitting irons or fairway woods. It appears 3/4ths of all hybrids came from a fairway wood and 1/4th of all hybrids came from an iron (such as the Titleist 503H, Mizuno, and Tour Edge).
I couldn't hit a fairway wood, so I wanted a club to behave more like an iron. I'm happy with my Titliest 504.H. Awesome feel.
