The pop-ups would be the result of the same 'out to in' swingpath that Nick mentioned.
With an 'out to in' swingpath, the club is coming into impact at a MUCH steeper angle. So, if you catch the face, it will most likely go left, and depending on the face angle
through impact, the ball may go STRAIGHT left, or slice.
With a pop-up, the club is coming in so steep and is likely still moving toward the bottom of your swing arc when contact is made, resulting in a ball that goes 'up'.
You can solve both problems by ingraining the proper swingpath on the through swing.
